Looking at getting 235/75 R16 tires this go around.

My spare is the original Goodyear Wrangler ST 225/75 RE16.

Are there any differential type issues that would cause problems if I keep the original spare?

There has been some discussion of 4 wheel drive and/or ESP (latter is not on 05) issues with different tire sizes which I suspect is more related to diameter than tread width. In any case I see no reason to worry about that difference so long as you use that spare only as a shortish distance spare and do not rotate it into the 4 on the ground. That said keep a close eye on the spare as it's at least 9 years old assuming it did not sit extra years in the factory before use, I think there is a code on the sidewall that would give you a build date. Simple age especially in the sun can induce sidewall cracking which is a big worry. I'd rotate one on the wider tires into the spare position when those tires wear enough to be replaced or you can often get a "deal" on a used tire of the same width to replace you spare for just a few $s if you want to replace the spare sooner.

Might but who cares if not in any 4-wheel mode and only using it for getting to tire repair place.

I tried running 2 different styles of 245/75/16 and the part time 4x4 and low - would not work

- i.e. you can move the selector and the rear wheels turned - front did not have power

only the Full time 4x4 worked.

( I learned this at Moab - when I blew a tire on Steel bender - not a great place to learn - I now only buy full sets of 5 and rotate all tires)

Gotta say, nobody should be using part time 4WD on Moab slickrock most of the time. It is even stickier than pavement, so driveline bind is a real issue. Just use 2WD most of the time, and switch to AWD when you get to a tough spot. Stuck? Then switch to 4WD.

Same goes for the slabs on the Rubicon or anywhere else where you have tires on solid surface most of the time. I watched a guy bind up on top of the Lion's Back near Moab...he had it in 4WD low to go up to the top, which you have to do, but then once you're up there you have to do a 3-8 point turn to get turned around to come back down. He bound up, broke his driveshaft, and couldn't control the vehicle coming back down. Not pretty.

Back to your question...I would try to stick with a full-size spare if you possibly can.

yes not having the same size spare is an issue if you need to use 4 wheel drive. there is an acceptable tolerance for the tire diameter and circumference, not sure what it is but you need the stay with in that or your 4 wheel drive system will not work proper, might not engage or could become damaged if used with different sized tires outside of the allowed tolerances. If you stay in 2 wheel dive its fine for a short time.

I buy all 5 tires and rotate them all so they wear the same and I never have an old out of date tire and I can use it in 4 wheel if needed.

Loin's back has been closed for years,along with baby lion's back.You use 4low in MOAB unless you don't like your brakes(and loose control) or trans/clutch.
Many hundreds of thousands have never had a issue using 4low on slick rock in MOAB,your not going fast enough anyways and have plenty of areas the binding will let loose and unbind.Heck when I'm there I don't even air back up after the 1st run,I stay at 10psi all week long till the end of the last trail run.

Tjkj2002, you're entitled to your opinion. Certainly coming down something steep like Lionsback you want to use low range 4WD to save your brakes and as a safety. Not disputing that. But turning around at the top would bind your driveline pretty badly; that's all I was saying. I've did just that up at the top of LB the first time I went up, and I saw that happen to this chap to the point of driveline damage that left him without the benefits of low range compression braking coming down. (He also chose to come down anyway, and lost control)

When there is loose dirt and or small rocks the enable some slip between front and rear axles, 4WD is fine. But on rock like that where tires can't slip, and where it's not too steep and where 2WD will do anyway, you're not doing yourself any favors using 4WD unless you are driving in a straight line. I've helped change 6-7 U-joints and one transfer case for people who did not heed that advice.

Lion's back was closed when I was there.

I really wanted the 4 low gearing - and didn't have any issues with binding - but I wasn't making any sharp turns on slickrock.

Troy was the one who told me to switch to fulltime 4x4 when the fronts weren't pulling - and I thought I was in 4x4 already.

(stopped on about a 6" step up - but without the fronts - the rears spun on loose gravel)


and the point of the comment- was that the 242 transfer case is very sensitive to mismatched tire size

so I still recommend the spare tire matching the other 4 - and rotate all 5.
