I can't seem to find a write up on how to replace the thermostat. Is it just unscrew it and put a new one on or is there more to it?

I happen to know a little about the thermostat replacement,

Its 3 bolts on the engine block on the side of the unit as well as disconnecting all the ports and the temp sending unit prior to removal.

Then scrape the gasket material off the engine block and put a new gasket back on when you bolt it up.

It can help to remove a few things in the engine bat to get better access to the bolts.

Sorry its not an amazing writeup, but its time for bed here. Good luck! Below are a couple shots of the unit after its out.

The easiest solution has been the in-hose thermostat and 2 hose clamps. Stuff it into the hose, shove the hose over the factory thermostat nipple until seated (pushing the in-hose deeper into the hose, but maintaining contact with the factory thermostat)... Then hose clamp both in place - one clamp on the in-hose thermostat to keep it from migrating, and the other on the hose / factory nipple to keep the hose where it lives.

That thermostat sells for like $8. Search on "stant" here to find the number. No other parts or changes are required.

A much less expensive alternative to the OEM thermostat...

When doing the stant thermostat in the hose do you leave the factory thermostat in place?

Yes you have to leave the OEM housing and its internal likely failed open tstat in place for the plumbing to work not that I'm personally fond of the inline option.

If the OEM one has failed or stuck in an open position, yes....
