Some time ago, I changed out the original filter head on my CRD for the "updated" one. Concerning the new one, after the block heater has been plugged in for a while, should the filter head also be warm to the touch? Thanks, Steve |

The fuel heater block heats the fuel in the filter cannister..................... So, yeah, seems like the warm fuel should then also warm-up the cannister, eh........... If the KJ has been running, should also be getting warm fuel from the tank, resulted from the return-fuel line The 115vac block heater warms the coolant in the engine block and oil in the crankcase - some radiated heat will also be resulted |

OK, thanks. Also, the fuel heater block is only powered when the vehicle is running, right? What signals it to turn off and on? Steve |

I believe it is on all the time, even in the summer. The current draw seems to be based on fuel temp. We have measured about 8 amp during the summer and close to 20 in the winter. It is a useless device on this vehicle. The fuel lines are exposed and gelling will occur there first if the fuel gets too cold. If the engine is running, the backflow from injectors and rail will pump in way more system heat than the little puck fuel heater. |

What signals it to turn off and on?Steve It is controlled by the OBC (On Board Computer) It monitors ambient air temperature and heats the fuel below a predetermined setpoint... It does not heat the fuel when the ignition switch is in the off position or when the motor is not running

Yes, the fuel heater is powered-on by the IGN switch - but, the heater comprises a temperature-dependent element which only allows current flow below a specific temperature - should never energize in summer climes - heater can self-deenergize when engine-bay temps are high enuff to warm the fuel-head - return-fuel can raise tank temps up to desired levels, also warming the fuel-head The thermo-plastic fuel tank is by nature insulative, reducing\preventing temperature conduction\convection into surrounding ambients - thus, fuel in the tank can be warmer than local ambients F'rinstance, similar refrigerated liquids will be colder in a covered glass container than in covered plastic container - 'nuther words, lids on - open containers expose surface of liquid content to normal refrigeration concepts, thus equalizing rate of entropy................... HVAC blower motor is on same power circuit |
