Post subject:  Viscous heater not engaging

Hello all,

I have a 2005 CRD with 195,000 miles with a GDE Turbo Kit/Tune, and transmission tune. The viscous heater is not engaging. It is about 30 F, and the engine is not warmed up. I have taken out the relay (R36), and jumped it and then it works. I have tried other relay's and it still doesn't work. When I put a different relay with it will click, engage the viscous heater for about 1/2 second, and then turn off.

Any help would be appreciated. It's already been -11 Windchill by mid November here in WI, and it would be nice to have some heat.

Thanks

The viscous heater has little benefit and significantly reduces fuel economy. Best bet is to plug in block heater and make sure you have a new thermostat. If temp gauge is running other than slightly left of vertical when running under load, you need to address thermostat situation.

Quite honestly, I don't even feel in the cabin that I disabled the viscous heater... Maybe it has something to do with having a (still) good thermostat and efan replaced viscous fan... Not sure, but I one won't ever enable the viscous heater.

Regarding why it's not working, I'm not sure, it would probably help to see if the coupling mechanism works, i.e. if the wires that turn it on have power when are supposed to. It sounds to me you have a working viscous heater but somewhere between computer and coupler things are not ok. Studying the electric schematics may help.
