Hi all, Will a Dana 35 Trak Loc diff fit inside a Dana 30 (front axle on a KJ?). Maybe a cheap way of getting extra traction in snow and ice? I am happy with the Trak Loc in the rear. I don't use this Jeep for serious wheeling so don't want to install a locker. Am I correct that the old quadra drive system uses Trak Loc front and back?

Been doing some home work. GC quadra drive is fitted with a vari-lok front and rear diff. Also read that Trak-lok was replaced in 2002 with Vari-lok. My KJ has a LSD on the rear any one know if its a Vari-lok or Trak-loc. Now searching for a qudra drive GC front axle to strip for parts? 1999-2004 . I am trying to do this on a tight budget.

Not sure if the UK spec KJ was different than US. Ours had the Tracloc as an option. Unfortunately, the clutches wear out in about 35K miles and become ineffective. Unfortunately, when you get into differential work, there is no "doing it on a budget", unless your budget is large. We had two of the factory units replaced under our 100K factory warranty, but when the carrier bearings got noisy at 125K and the warranty had expired, I went with a Detroit TruTrac. This is a gear type that does not wear out. Make sure to use SWEPCO 212 gear oil. Budget about $2000 US for the parts, rebuild and install. With one of these installed, you will have " 3 wheel" drive which gets us out of wet fields towing a 5K lb. horse trailer.

2 grand to install a truetrac? That seems mighty high when the limited slip alone is only like 500 bucks.

The OE LSD is the trash loc,worthless.The DTT is a way better option and you can get one for the front also.

Interesting. I have the OEM limited slip, and 140k on the odo. I still notice it hooking up, but not as tightly as it did when new. I have a steep dirt/gravel driveway and I live in Oregon (read: rain), so I get to test slip very regularly. Where other RWD vehicles dig trenches on one side only trying to get out, the Libby slips for a foot or so then the other side seems to take over.

I've changed fluid three times on that axle, with friction modifier every time. Maybe that's the difference?

I prefer a limited slip on my rig: I deal more with icy roads than with trails, and lockers IME can make for some very exciting driving on ice...not in a good way.

That makes more sense, i figured it would be 500 or less to get one installed plus the price of the part. At some point id like to throw a DTT in both the front and the rear to take advantage of the full time 4wd.

I do like the idea of the Detroit True Loc front and back. No friction additive and no clutches to wear out. I been reading about setting up a diff (back lash etc. etc..) Is it that hard to do? I know you need some specialized tools but I am fortunate to have an engineering company next door with everything including the kitchen sink. I am trying to track down a company this side to supply me a True Trac at a reasonable price for the front. The rear LSD is still tight with plenty of life left.
Has any one fitted the DTT up front? What's it like in the ice or snow on corners

I ran a DTT up front for years in my KJ,loved it in the winter.In 4wd(no full time here) it was a true point and shoot driving on ice and deep snow.


Expect the install cost to be much more then $500 for the front since the whole front diff must be removed to do the install and that calls for 5.5 hours of labor alone.If you have never set up a diff it's not hard but very time consuming and you will need to spend as much $$$ on the correct tools as it would cost to have a pro do it for you.

They list 2 DTT for Dana 30. (1) gear ratio 2.73 and above. (2) gear ratio 2.55 and below. My KJ has 4.1 gear ratio which DTT should I go for?

I will double check the ratio but 99% sure its 4.10. Its a manual trans not auto which has the same ratio as 2.5 crd manual. All 2.5 CRD are manual none fitted with auto.

I wanna do front and rear DTT's. I regret not pulling the trigger this summer when they had the MIR's.

The cost of the DTT for 3.55 ratio is nearly $200 more? I am planning to do both front and rear and I may change the gearing to 4.10. My question is how much different will it make? At present 60mph is + - 2500rpm my maths is not up to it? +or-

You will roughly see a 15% increase in rpm's compared to what you currently see given the same tire size are used.


Oh and just noticed you list the 242 select trac t-case,none was offered from the factory behind the manual trans.You install that your self? It sure did not come like that from the factory.

yes I installed the 242 I always liked the benefit of fulltime 4wd. Some one said it can cause binding but 6 months on all ok.
Can I remove the drive shafts axle and still drive the Jeep. Is it necessary to put a large bolt through the hub to keep the hub bearings together?
