| Post subject: | Front Diff Question |
Finally got around to changing front diff fluid today. Didn't realize there would be a green o-ring on the drain plug. Didn't see anything about it in the service manual or online write-ups. I suppose that's a HNBR o-ring, but I just used a 3/4" black rubber Danco o-ring from the plumbing dept. of Home Depot. I know regular O-rings have been suggested for the oil pan plug, so do you think it's ok for the diff as well? Thanks in adavance! |

If the material is the same that is used on the engine then it should also work on the diff. use it then look where you park for drips. You should be doing that anyway. If the oil eats it up you would know then you can worry about it. |

Agreed...I think I'll just keep an eye on it. After a little research on the subject, it appears the green O-rings are a little more chemical and temp resistant, but I think the standard o-ring will be fine, as they are also somewhat chemical resistant. If a leak develops, I'm sure it will be minor. I really hate the smell of diff fluid, though. Brings back horrible memories of a 700 mile trip where my diff breather came off my old truck. Sprayed fluid all over the back of my truck, and it smelled for two years. Luckily, my diff survived the trip, but oh.....that smell.....horrible.... |

The only chemical those generic o'rings are resistant to is H2O with chlorine bug-killer - 'nuther words: drinking water They're usually for faucet and commode-valve repair with bees-wax lubricant Best to keep an eye or two and a nostril or so on that drain-plug, eh............... |
