My daughters CRD #2 with the Chrysler 5 volt glow plugs, wouldn't start yesterday, after setting at work for six hours at 9 degrees. :banghead:
Didn't have a chance to add any winter Kleandeisel fuel additive to the tank like I normally do this time of the year.

Anyhow, I went today and got it running (16 degrees outside) , put jumper cables on for good measure before even attempting.
Got it started, but sounded like hell for about 15 seconds. Does that hard knocking cause any damage?

My daily driver CRD # 1, still has it's ceramic glow plugs, and hasn't let me down yet.
I can't plug the block heater in while it's setting at work, but it always starts. Just takes a little longer crank time before it jumps to life.
I always plug it in at home, just to hopefully prolong the engine's life.

Mine has the same issue. Below 20ºF it is difficult to impossible to start without plugging it in. Unfortunately my new house does not have an easily accessible plug. I had to borrow my neighbors extension cord(s) to run it to the back of my house by the workshop door. I am really disappointed with the design and function of the updated glow plug system. Hell, my 1980 Volvo 264 diesel and my wifes 2014 VW Passat TDI started right up and 7ºF... but not the CRD...

Keith explained in a post a while ago how none of the steel plugs that are currently available for the 2.8 are properly configured for it and that they do not get quite as hot as the OEM ceramics. All I can suggest besides the obvious of plugging it in, is to use the Canadian sourced Mobil 1 0W-40 turbo diesel oil I use in the dead of winter. It comes in litre bottles and takes exactly 6 with the original filter.
