Post subject:  MAF or EGR

I have been dealing with bad gas millage and lots of smoke since I cleaned my EGR and the line going to the intake (about 4 months a go). Today I decided to try the ORM to see if it helped. The smoke seems to be gone (haven't checked mpgs yet). If my mpg are better I have to believe either the MAF or EGR is bad. Is there a way to check which one is bad? I have had no CEL until I did the ORM.

I do have some air in the fuel filter head that I have been trying to fix. New filter head, new fuel lines on tank but still seem to have the air leak. Lifter pump is next. I don't believe this is my problem though because even when freshly bleed It still smokes like a chimney.

I used to get 23mpgs I'm now at 15. I may as well drive a full size gas pickup.

My big question is: Can you tell if it is the EGR or the MAF causing problems?

I like to try simple things first. Did you have the mpg/smoke issue before cleaning the EGR? If not then since you say you cleaned the EGR I would conclude you removed it and associated "stuff" from the vehicle. Hence my initial guess, given lots of smoke/low mpg/presumable some degree of low power, is that when you reinstalled the EGR and "stuff" things did not get buttoned up tight so you have a boost leak or some sensor plug you pulled did not get reinstalled.

When i cleaned the EGR and the line leading to the intake I put it back together using new gaskets and plenty of torque. I have good confidence in that. Also I do not have any low boost codes.

What seems to be helping is unplugging the MAF sensor. My thought is that the MAF could have been bad for a long time but the EGR line leading to the intake was so clogged it didn't make a difference. Now that it is open either the MAF is malfunctioning causing the EGR to open incorrectly or the EGR is broken by itself. I'm not sure how to check which one is malfunctioning with out playing the fun game of buy and try.
