Yes the early Export CRDs have 11 volt glow plugs switched on by two fat relays for a given time as decided by the ECM....no Glow Plug Controller and no error checking other than to check that neither of the relay coils are open circuit or shorted out.

They are 11 volt glow plugs because they know that at least one volt will get dropped over the relay contacts and connectors because of the high current.

I think from 2005 the Export models changed to the same setup as the USA models with 7 volt plugs.
I have seen some posts on one of the Jeep forums of disgruntled Austrian KJ CRD owners converting their 7/5 volt systems back to the 11 volt system.

I have had no problems with my 11 volt system but for all I know a glow plug could be dead....no errors are posted and I live in a warm climate so starting is never a problem! :wink:

What's a bit tricky with the eBay listing is that they say 2004+ for the year, so this would indicate present as I understand, including 2.8L 2005 and 2006 engine models. May as well be typo in the listing.

I wonder how hard is to program the ecu for those 11v plugs and how hard would be the swap... Wonder if using the existing 7v gp relay to start those 2 relays for 11v plugs would work without any ecu reflash...

They're Bosch Duraterm technology just like the OE 5V plugs. Is there any reason to think that they will perform any better that the OE plugs?

Lower voltage plugs were introduced as a solution to battery droop experienced during starting. They can guarantee to always be able to supply this lower voltage even if the battery drops significantly below nominal.

If anything the 5V plugs should perform better but at the end of the day neither will perform as well as the 7V ceramics that came with your vehicle.

I was just about to start a new topic when I saw this thread. I've seen these plugs on eBay too. I can't overstate how much the 7V Etecno plugs I put in last spring suck. First, I had to replace them all over the summer since the manufacturer apparently shipped a bad batch and they all failed on me. Setting that aside, these plugs just don't work very well, and apparently the new 5V OEM plugs are no better. My wife's Jeep will not start if it sits in temperatures below about 15°F. I need to plug it in for an hour and then it starts right up. I never had problems with the ceramic plugs down to 0°F. This isn't a huge problem at home, but my wife drives this vehicle to work and she was barely able to get it started one evening on a very cold day when temps never got out of the teens. This doesn't happen often here in southeastern Massachusetts, but it's supposed to happen again later this week.

I replaced my ceramic plugs proactively when then had about 200,000 miles on them. If I could get a brand new set, I'd put them back in in a heartbeat and plan on replacing them every 100,000 miles (if I should be so lucky to see 300 or 400k!). If these plugs on eBay are designed to work on 11V, then I think they'll only produce about 2/3 the heat if you put them in a 7V system. I wonder if GDE would consider writing a ECU program to support these 11V plugs?

I check with Keith at GDE on this. Here's his feedback:

"Others have asked about these in the past. They are the glow plugs used on the VM engine from 2001-2004. They have a 10 second warm-up period and are not as hot as the 5 volt metallic or 7 volt metallic plugs. The old style plugs are very sensitive to battery voltage, whereas the pulse width modulated glow plugs used in 2005+ always have enough volts to heat up. The 5 volt mopar plugs are slightly better than the etecnos, but the ceramics are still the best for start ability."

Can people who have the new 5V OE plugs installed post what temperatures they begin to have starting troubles at? Even if I could gain 10° or so I'd consider installing the OE plugs and ECU flash.

Mine has starts in below 0 weather on only 3 etecno plugs. It doesn't like it, but it'll do it, on the first crank too.

For some history it has about 20,000 miles on the complete top end rebuild/cleaning. And my injectors are honed out +25%, I'm getting 260hp on a 200hp tune because of them, so maybe the extra fuel it squirts at startup is why I'm getting better starts, dunno.

I've also been waiting for all the dingers and chimes to go off before I crank it.

That's amazing! I've read several other posts about people having a tough time starting with these plugs in the teens. I'd love to be able to start at single digits. I've tried waiting for lights to go off before cranking and cycling the plugs multiple times. Makes no difference.

I think I have trouble at about 15 F. I plug in below 20. I've found that even 30 minutes plugged in makes it start easy. Or set up a timer and give it an hour, although that might be tough at work. Or buy one of Turbodieselfreak's thermostats, and have your wife start the thing at lunch for 10 minutes or so on the really cold days.

I have tried the "don't crank till the chime stops beeping" trick and I found that it starts faster, no matter if it's hot or cold. I have started without weeks intake heater without issues in 10 degree weather with etechnos.

Im seeing a trend here that people with lift pumps tend to have less starting issues than people with out. Id hazard to guess it has to do with how thick diesel gets when its cold out, and the lift pump helps keep everything primed. I hope to one day get my jeep back while its still cold and snowy and test this.

Another trend is "wait for the chimes." It's made a night and day difference for me this winter vs last, both with the same set of etecnos. I'm getting all-day at work in single digits starts that I would call " not bad."

I noticed same thing. Just curious, do you have any kind of auxiliary fuel pump? Funnyman may have a point in fuel pump helping to move the fuel better and pressurizing the fuel system.

No auxiliary pump. To this point I've just managed maintenance items, Samco hoses and a GDE tune. Need to update my signature I suppose :-)

That's because they all had ceramic glow plugs in them that worked properly! My Jeep had 190,000 miles on it last winter and it never had any cold start problems. I put Etecnos in last spring and this winter, it's a PITA.
