New to CRD, new to diesel, what a greasy mess.

I recently joined the board while searching for a "wtf" source of information. The Noob Guide was a tremendous help so I will just give you a quick run down of what has happened in the last 10,000 miles since I inherited my CRD

So I got her (2006 Liberty CRD) with roughly 116,000 miles on her and none of the issues resolved. It was my mom's and while she kept up on the maintenance she just followed her mechanics lead sooooo... When I got it I spent 10,000 miles fixing the little things while researching (leisurely) the EGR problem. I had to replace the rear driver side window regulator which was super easy (cable unit from 1A auto) . I had to replace the rear window stays (even easier), I just got some Strong Arms from somewhere and now its hard to close hahahaha.

Anyway I was driving to work one morning and it started surging at constant throttle, nothing violent just steady. She also lost power almost like limp mode but I could get maybe 30mph out of her, no hills, no fuel economy (11mpg), tons of smoke. It also started throwing all sorts of codes Engine Speed Circuit Malfunction, Piston 1 Injector, low pressure EGR, low pressure turbo, glow plug. I couldn't find a diesel shop near me so I just took it to a reputable independent shop and asked them to give it a once over. They were really cool and gave me a complete rundown of codes, visual inspection, and recommendations. The Intercooler tubes had ruptured and the turbo intake tube was in pretty bad shape. I decided enough was enough, read the noob guide several times over and ordered the following; Samco intercooler tubes, OEM turbo intake tube, GDE ECU ecotune, GDE TCU ecotune.

3.5hrs of patience and good music later and she is back to normal. I'll be doing the CCV next, then its on to making her the perfect camping vehicle.

Welcome to the forum, and glad we can be of service!

You might want to fill in the location field in your profile, so that if you have any issues, we can direct help to you faster.
With that many miles and the age - Have you replaced the timing belt? If you haven't done it, and can't find solid proof that it was done, consider not driving it unless absolutely necessary until it is done. The belt is WAY overdue on both age and mileage if it is still the original.

If you don't want (or cannot) do the timing belt yourself - and if it needs it based on existing maintenance records - then depending on your location, I am the travelling mechanic that might be able to assist you. I'm OK if you want to tackle it yourself, I just don't want to see anyone ignore the single most important maintenance item in their engine.

She has a good mechanic and he proactively kept her up to date on the maintenance schedule.

Now Im just going through my list of stuff to upgrade. stereo, roof basket, side steps, brush guard, renegade light bar...

Has the timing belt been replaced? If not, it should be on the top of your list and the sooner the better. As Geordi stated, it is on borrowed time, overdue on mileage and time. If it breaks or stripps some teeth, it will get real expensive, real quick! This is an interference engine and out of time parts hit each other and break parts.... :grim:

If you need advice on anything, just ask, there are lots of help on here who have been there and done it before....

maybe I wasn't specific enough but she is UP TO DATE on maintenance. The mechanic was even cool enough to send me all the records.

Timing Belt, Water, Serpentine Belt, Alternator, Tensioner Assembly, Idler Pulley & Belt, One U-joint & Front Brake Pads. They were all replaced at or near to the recommended replacement times.

Very uncommon indeed! Most new owners inherit one that all the above are in dire need of.
You sir, are a very lucky new owner, count your blessings.... :-)r

Wish mine had of been like that when I purchased it a few years ago, could have saved a bundle!!!! :lol:

Now Im just sorta of going through the list of what I should proactively change. Id rather go after things before they break so I can plan for the expense. I also need to find a good source for a brush guard bumper, roof basket, side steps, and renegade light bar. Im really enjoying this Jeep!!

FYI - if you go off paved roads you really need some skid plates - even if they're factory

you don't have much ground clearance stock and the oil filter and transmission pan are vulnerable.

Oil filer is really vulnerable if you don't have a skid plate, factory or home made. I made my own! If anyone needs the dimensions, just let me know.... :idea:
