My wife found this diesel for sale 4 months ago and we bought it. I like the jeep very much and the diesel rocks. It had 166k when I bought it in Portland and now I have 172k on it. I had to get a new thermostat housing for it, so I could stay warm in it. That was a easy to fix item,,,,expensive but easy to fix.
Now I have 2 glow plugs that are out, #3 and #4. So I ordered the glow plugs from idparts. Waiting on them to arrive.

Oh and now I have my anti lock light, traction control and another light on.

So I have been reading and this jeep is expensive to fix. My fuel mileage averages 17 to 21 mpg actual. I had a brief, I mean very brief time were I actually got 24mpg. But was before my dash light up like a Christmas tree. Oh I also got a brake grinding, it's the front drivers one.


I am beginning to think I should have keep my dodge dakota that got 13 to 15 mpg. It was cheaper to fix. This jeep just might kill me in outflow of money. I love it and I am doing all the work myself. So when I have the Fcv and egr off to replace glow plugs I will clean it and reinstall. I would do the weeks kit but don't have the money.

So if you have any good things to say bout these jeeps please let me know. I am just a little depressed with how much they are to fix. And I won't tell the wife any of it due to she getting an attitude about it.

First off, PLEASE TELL US THAT THE TIMING BELT WAS CHANGED BEFORE YOU BOUGHT IT.
The timing belt needs to be changed every 100,000 miles. If it hasnt been done you are way over due.
And it looks like you are getting close to needing a second t belt change.

Glow plugs eventually burn out. Having to replace them is normal.

The ABS light, traction control, and brake light are all in because you have a bad ABS sensor somewhere. This is a common problem with lots of different vehicles.

Brake grinding? Are your brake pads worn out? All jeep libertys are known to have problems with brake caliper sticking and causing excess heat and brake wear.

Low MPG? You should be able to get close to 30mpg on long highway trips. For short trips around the city, 20mpg is pretty normal. There are lots of things you can do to improve your MPG. Start by cleaning your MAP sensor. Then find a way to disable, block, or remove the EGR valve.
And of course, read the noob guide.

I have 160,000 miles on my 2005 CRD. Other than normal maintenance, its been a fairly inexpensive vehicle to operate. Its had its share of small problems but nothing major.
Back in december i drove it from FL to CA and back with my wife, daughter, and dog. Had a few minor problems along the way. Nothing that required any expense.

Absolutely love mine to death. Had a $4000 hiccup at 148k, but since then it's been perfect. We really need to upsize, but what else is going to get the mileage like these, with 4x4, and no emission dpf and def crap to have to deal with?

If you can do your own wrenching they are not all that costly to keep up, if you cant, and you don't have deep pockets, you might want to consider selling it?

Thanks for the info.

The timing belt was changed at 98k I believe. The glow plugs I consider expendable like spark plugs. I will do as much of the wrenching myself as I can.

I drive 27 miles each way to work. I only have 2 miles of that in city limits. I drive mostly 60 to 70 mph. When I drove from north idaho to Bozeman Montana with it it only got 21mpg.

I am going to the stealership and getting egr and Fcv gaskets for when I change out my glow plugs. The liberty fires right up even with 2 plugs not working. But if the temps are below 25f then it struggles a little bit but it runs.

I will be checking out the brake in the morning and figuring out what it needs and go to napa.

What scares me is that a head is $1750 and a new engine is $????. But I do like it. I am thinking of making a roof rack to hold our stuff on long drives including fuel. Man is this jeep peppy with the diesel and yes it has been reflashed with the dealership f37 and a new TQ installed in 2007. I went to the local jeep dealer and looked up the recalls. Only one left is the trailer hitch to take care of.

Try idparts.com first, they have a lot of parts for Crd. Also, for maybe 100+ you can get weeks intake kit which will make replacing glow plugs a joke in the future. You gut out all the intake elbow and use his kit, which comes with an egr block off plate too. Using weeks kit requires some sort of tune (gde or free tunes available from Crd tech forum) to disable the egr and fcv (flow control valve is mounted in the factory elbow) mil in the dashboard. Just fyi, weeks (https://shop.sasquatchparts.com) has an intake kit with a heater, if you frequently start below 10 degrees it will help.

Oh man, this sounds familiar :banghead:

Something good to say? They make great hobby vehicles but I don't imagine your wife wants to hear that.
