 Post subject: why won't my lib jell up?

Anybody ever had their Lib jell up in cold weather?? I don't recall seeing any threads on that.. (don't get me wrong, I am mystified and glad it's a cold trooper)

My dodges and tractors all need at least some sort of winterization *above and beyond what is available at the pump* for down to about zero.. colder than that will need blending with #1.. up to 50%.
At 20 below, it's gotta be almost 75% #1.. otherwise I'm sitting on the side of the road.....
......waiting for my wife in the Lib to pick me up!! (which has jive ol winterized 'pump' #2) no other additives besides a little 2 stroke from time to time.

Again, I am not complaining one iota!

Has ANYONE been stranded because of jelling??

Im not sure if you've gotten lucky or you guys have poor fuel where you are. Ive never had to mix #1 with my fuel in the winter to prevent gelling in any of my vehicles. I've got an 85 F250 and all I have ever had to do is add Howes or Power Service and its never had an issue with gelled fuel. Sounds like your dodge and tractor might have other issues. Where are you located?

I have a powerstroke and 4 diesel dfarm tractors and I have never put any additives in my fuel, nor do I plug then in. Has bee. -20 lows with highs of 20 all week

NC Nebraska. It isn't just me, all my neighbors have the same problems. Old, new, any brand of vehicle or tractor too.
It's our FUEL. We all get it from the same pipeline terminal..

The failure mode we observe (heavy equipment dealer) for gelled fuel is as follows.

Unit starts and runs (not a function of fuel unless water freezes and obstructs, then will not start)

Unit idles and warms up, 1-5 minutes

Unit dies, and will not re start, or unit is loaded onto a trailer and dies in process.

Waxing plugs filter, this requires some flow to complete in mild conditions (-5 to +15f)

We see this every day.

Crd has electric dc filter heater. Perfect, no, but good? yes.

Places swap to #1 blends at different ratios and different levels of additives. If you know your going into cold weather, (-5 to +15F) dose your fuel with an anti gelling additive and call it done.

I know with our heater the crd's can run without anti gel additives down to pretty good temps, easily into 0F MOST OF THE TIME

Pick your poison, standyne or power service, one jams water through filter, the other drops it into tank.

Use it.

Drive.

Also common rail pressurizes the fuel several times more than the old school mechanical pumps ever did. The more you compress, the more heat that is created.this goes back to the tank (a relatively short distance vs a big tractor, full size truck, semi, etc) and begins warming the in-tank fuel. The electric fuel heater helps alot too.

I just installed a Arctic Fox heat exchanger on my daily chore tractor.. 'linehauler' series. If it works out, I'm going to put them in my DD dodges!
I think you nailed it with the cp3 system, a lot of return in those! and the heater in the filterhead.

everything else I have is old enough to vote! and I can pee faster than what those return!
.... I am getting old too!.... it's not a pretty sight. :furious:

I installed a racor 215 fuel filter assembly in a 1986 isuzu trooper II diesel. it was expensive (around $300 I think), but it has a 200 watt bowl heater. Simply supply it power 5 min before you plan to start and youll have 80°f+ fuel in your entire fuel filter. If your engine is frosted over you can watch the pump and lines thaw out in seconds, and the engine runs smoother too.
the heater is automatic, it only comes on once the fuel gets down to a certain temp, then it'll kick on and stay on until 80°. I haven't checked to see if it continues to cycle or if it only comes on once.
