Hey guys,

We got some icy slush here in Charlotte last night and the roads were surprisingly slick. I decided to put it in 4WD and used Part Time (I believe this is the correct choice for this situation??). Anyway, it worked great except when trying to make low speed sharp turns (such as when I was turning into a parking lot) when it felt like it was struggling to make the turn due to driveline issues. It's hard for me to explain but it felt like something in the driveline was holding back the momentum of the car while making the turn.

Is this because of choosing part time? Should I have been in Full Time?

Thanks!

You want full time not part time.

Part time means you use it part time. Your binding the driveline we. Turning sharp. If it is slick it's fine to use part time however you need to make sure it is slick enough to slip. Full time is a much better system for slick roads and driving.

Part time is more suited for offroad

It's a lil confus8ng.

Full time means you can use it no matter what so "full time"

Part time means it should only be used in low traction situations so you use it part time.

Sounds like the park g lot wasn't slick enough

id honestly only stick to 4 wheel drive on straight aways or off road. one of these days something will snap or loosen up.

I learned my lesson with 4x4 last year. luckily no damage. unless its an all wheel drive vehicle, 4x4 stays off. so far this winter ive hit 4x4 high twice. once on ice and the other for 6 inches of snow.

Ditto!! :!:
Never use Part Time on pavement...
General Rule:
Part Time = OFF pavement -- center *viscous coupling is OUT of service in this mode and basiclly locks front and read axles together as one, thus the binding on any hard flat surface like pavement anytime the steering is turned changing the rotational rates between the front and rear drive axles...
Full Time = ON or OFF pavement -- center viscous coupling is IN service in this mode and allows front and real axles to rotate at different rates ant any time.

*A viscous coupling is a mechanical device which transfers torque and rotation by the medium of a viscous fluid.

I've taken the KISS route since I still cannot totally wrap my head around when to use part-time. My solution is if it seems appropriate to use 4 wheel just use full-time. I've used low exactly once to pull an idiot driving a 2-wheel drive Toyota Camry out of North Florida beach sugar sand.
