Mine were both not bad, but I opted to let the FCV oil continue to scrub away at the intake parts, rather then let it by dry and crusty.

I would think It would be a miracle if a CRD could run with it with a charcoal briquet stuck in there like that.

My 2005 had the heads cleaned at 61,000 because of soot build-up. I am installing the Weeks kit this week at 78,000. Hopefully mine should be relatively clean.
17,000 miles should not have messed it up too bad.

Wow... Never seen any look that bad. I actually haven't seen any with more than about a 1/4" deep coat. What did that owner do to that CRD?
