Given the frequent recommended rear axle fluid changes of the CRD, I am considering installing an aftermarket rear diff cover with a drain plug. G2 and American Rebel MFG make rear axle covers with drain plugs. They also appear to have a small "overflow plug" at the desired fluid level. I have the black powder coated model with magnetic dipstick and the adjustable carrier bearing support studs. We have gone through 3 rear end rebuilds in 150 K miles and I was looking for all things to enhance longevity. We ditched the TracLoc LSD and replaced it with a Detroit TrueTrac. Oil is now SWEPCO 212 (85-140 dino, with moly) and we had the (third) ring and pinion REM treated. (We tow a 5000 lb horse trailer and are putting out 390 ft lbs of torque at the rear wheels.) The G2 is particularly useful after installing a DTT, because the spider gears produce a fair amount of metal filings for quite a while. The dipstick takes them out of suspension and allows you to remove them by just wiping the dipstick every few thousand miles. The cover fits well and does not leak. Be sure to put blue loctite on the mounting bolts. DOC |

You'll have to search the forum for it but a bunch of us, myself included drilled the bottom of the rear. There is a nice flat surface there and it is quiet thick. Drill it, tap it and install a standard magnetic oil drain plug with washer, you can buy at most auto parts stores. Cost about ten bucks and an hour or so of time..... Good luck. |
