While traveling on the highway, my CRD just lost power to the wheels.

While pressing on the fuel pedal I heard and felt a pop sound from the area just under my feet, I rolled to a stop and got it towed to a transmission shop who indicated that they wont get to it till Monday.

Transmission will not engage when the shifter is moved into drive or reverse. When the shifter is moved into the park position the car does not roll.

Boost hoses look to be OK.

No transmission fluid leak.

No engine light.

Anyone ever experience this?

Any transmission guys out there?

Torque converter failure or input shaft failure? All guessing until the trans gets pulled out.

Engine still runs, right?

Everything after that point is a Jeep issue, not a CRD issue. I know that doesn't make you feel any better right now, but it actually greatly increases your chances of the repair being done right.

Hmm, that is something I forgot about - I hope he checked it, but my own experience suggests that the position of the handle may or may not have anything to do with the position of the lever on the case - or the forks inside - if something bad has happened to the transfer case.

Hopefully if that is the solution, the mechanic tells him so, and he is only out the time and tow fee. If it is more complicated than that, like the transfer case buggered up internally... Then that is also not a CRD issue, but a Jeep issue, and not that terrible to fix.

Cases are available from boneyards for a few hundred bucks, and they are all mechanical, so no problems in getting one and using it.

I suppose it's vaguely possible that the 4-wheel drive xfr case somehow went into neutral but unless it did something weird internally the only way to do so would involve the 4-wheel drive shift lever which is cable connected to the external lever on the xfr case by a cable. I can think of 2 things 1) the cable broke or the retention clip at the xfr lever end broke in which case if you pull on the 4-wheel drive shift lever there will be zero resistance (same as when I lost that clip) or 2) the plastic clip that "retains" the other end of the cable housing broke in which case there is no way to "pull" the cable. Not sure what that would feel like on the 4-wheel drive shift lever.

So if that little nylon gubbin that connects the cable to the transfer case lets go, is there a position the arm can move to where there is no connection between the input and output shafts of the Xfer case?

Yes the "N" position in the xfr case disconnects both front and rear drive shafts which I presume means vehicle won't move but how if would get there if the plastic thing or associated cable let go I do not know. Easy enough to check. And as mentioned this is a "Jeep" issue not a "CRD" issue so any decent 4-wheel drive tranny shop should be able to diagnose and fix.

Correct - this allows long-distance towing behind big RV camper bus - pop-shifting out of range can happen when driver confuses xfercase shifter with parking brake lever, then hastily recovers without ensuring xfercase shifter is fully engaged - encountered road-bump(s) can do the trick

The problem with this theory is that the transfer case had to have been in 4wd full time as the last used position for it to have jumped to neutral. It won't have done that if you are driving around in 2wd all the time.

Agreed - this is a full-time 4wd system, can be run on pavement as well as off - who knows the previous position (the Shadow do..........) - certainly not a driver misteaking the shift lever for the brake lever, eh............

Ok, update:

The transmission shop could not determine what the problem was without tearing into it and rebuilding it for $2,500 and possibly more.

I had hoped it was an easy fix and not a rebuild, hence the reason why it was at his shop and not the dealer.

I told him to hold off until I checked with the dealer to see if the transmission was still under warranty and lo and behold the Jeep service rep said that it was still under warranty, since it was replaced in the spring of 2013.

Update.

Bad front pump.

It is being replaced along with the torque converter.

I wonder if the service manager would accept my request to replace the spec. torque converter with the heavier duty Ram unit.

Anybody have a part number for the Ram torque converter?

Did the pump failure cause any metal to break loose? If so, be sure and flush and clean the valve body good as those metal shards play havoc with all the plungers in the valve body... :wink:

pretty much the same thing happened to mine in September on the way home from a long camping trip. I was on the turnpike towing a pop up carrying a load of gear and a kayak.

mine just dropped out of gear on approach to a tunnel. I checked everything I could on the side of the road. I found nothing but fluid seemed low hard to tell how much on a hill, but not any leak I could see. I got towed in to a local shop by AAA the next day they said it was the transmission. low in fluid by a few quarts and somewhat burnt. they didn't find any leaks either.
they tried to add fluid but still no gears at all. I was kind of captive so I had to go with a Jasper re-manufactured transmission that they recommended.

Its been good since the trans was replaced. I had the initial fluid change done last week after 5k break in. Only thing I don't like is Jasper could not tell me what spec the TC was made to.
