The elusive MOPAR RX170766AA remanufactured Long Block “export” Diesel. The search begins!

Having developed a bad case of rod knock in the #2 cylinder at 190K I have been forced to start the hunt for a replacement. After trying over the last week a multitude of ways of obtaining one of these and getting nowhere I have finally been put in touch with a reliable Chrysler source who explained that there are none of these in existence. But due to a 7 hour time difference and previous commitments on both our parts we had to cut our conversation short. We will continue the search tomorrow.

To be continued:

PS. it should be called "Unobtainium"

When you actually go through the process you get this answer.
"We can't order it" so it's advertised but can't be delivered.
Things that are advertised that you can't actually get make me try all the harder to make the company live up to its advertising.

Update!

As of 5:50am HST none of these motor exsist in the Chrysler inventory in the US, or are "in the pipeline ".

My sources at chyrsler are looking for alternatives and will get back to sometime on Monday.

The quest continues!

The alternative might be the $5500 US build engine?

Cant wait to hear the outcome as well? :CAMPING:

scary thought since you are halfway to china. I googled the Vm motori engine once and had a bunch of chinese suppliers listed.

Locally in Grandrapids Michigan Craigslist has 2 guys parting out diesels now. Can you slow ship a long block to you?

Someone also had a cheap lift kit for 265.00. But it included the JBA upper control arms?

Hmm...I just took note of your location. I live in Captain Cook (first lava flow South actually, near Kona Paradise). Let me know if you need any help. I'm always happy to help a fellow Diesel Jeeper!

Also, which local CRD are you? There was one I used to see at the airport from time to time that was almost a clone to my dark green 05 sport, but I think it had a roof rack and Marine Corps base parking stickers.

Good luck with your search!

Aloha All!

As of today: MOPAR R3014014AC a remanufactured long block does exsist and is obtainable for our rides. +/- $6000.00

MOPAR RX170766AA remanufactured long block "EXPORT" which should fit +/- $3300. can't be found in North America. They may say they have it but when you order it, no one can get it.

Looks like I'll be removing my engine and learning how to rebuild it.

As long as you aren't dealing with some newly-installed windows in the block, you should be able to rebuild it just fine with parts from IDparts or from The VM Specialist.

This may not work, but if worse comes to worse, these people should be able to get you one. Please note, shipping charges will be hideous.

How thorough do you want to be? It's not hard. It's really a neat design, and is pretty simple. Make sure you keep everything labeled as you tear it down. Keep all the pistons, rod, and rod caps labeled with their proper sleeve.

Feel free to PM me with questions.

I got all of my parts from either IDParts and MoparPartsAmerica.com.

From the Horses mouth, AKA the North American VM Motori distributor.

10012182F Long Block = $5,764.06
12032271 gasket kit = 328.35

4 weeks for the factory to build it then 4 to 6 weeks for shipping

for compairson sake:

That $6000 includes a warranty from the manufacture too i believe.

I just had my engine rebuilt, and spent $5200 on parts alone from ID parts. This included a new head, pistons, liners, rockers, studs, thermostat, and assorted random odds and ends. Then there was the labor to tear it down, clean it up, and reassemble. $5700 sounds like a steal to me for new everything.

Depending on what is wrong with yours, and doing the labor yourself, you could potentially save a ton of money. But its possible you end up spending more than what a new long block cost.

And that is exactly the issue. My Jeep has 191,000 miles on it and has been very well maintained But,
my mechanic has mentioned because of the high millage I should expect the worse case. And that the labor and parts could exceed the price of a new engine.

That's why I've been trying to find one these (export) long blocks. At $3300 it would be the best way to solve the problem.

As for doing it myself, I've no problem taking it apart, but I would have a hard time telling whats wrong and reassembling it.

if you are looking to spend about 3500-4000 then there are a lot of sellers on Alibaba that list these engines as new in these price ranges delivered state side.

I question where are these engine made? China?

Complete new VM 2.8L assembled at those prices?

If so, then I can't believe that the company producing them is under contract with VM?

The Chinese would find a way to counterfeit a ham sandwich if they thought they could make a buck on it.

Sorry, but there is no way AT ALL that I'd ever trust one of their blocks, and they are the vast majority of sellers for everything on Alibaba.
Meanwhile, there is still the same concept: This is a rebuildable block. Why are you looking to waste the iron, if it doesn't have any holes or cracks in it? Parts are available, and HAVE TO be cheaper than buying the whole thing!
