Post subject:  Repeat failure of the #3 Glowplug

I have had an issue with the #3 plug failing repeatedly. There is no mechanical damage to the plug, they are just open when read on the DVOM. I have the GDE Eco-Tune. I am using the original type ceramic 7V plugs. I am thinking perhaps I should replace the glowplug module. Has anyone had a similar problem, and what was the fix?

Thanks.

There was an update to the Glow Plug module, not sure if it is the cause of your issue though.

There is a posting regarding the revised number for the unit that you will need to search for.

This jeep had the GDE Eco-Tune flashed to it in late 2013. It was my understanding that this GDE tune had an updated Glow Plug control scheme?

Where are you getting OEM ceramic glow plugs to replace the ones that have been failing?

I bought a box of 10 NOS plugs on Ebay for $100 in early 2014.

Mine had a repeat fail on the #2 plug -and it was a cracked head

the final way the tech diagnosed it-
pulled the plug - to check it - replaced (much easier on #2)
pressurized the cooling system
left overnight
next morning pulled the plug - had antifreeze on the tip.

replaced under extended warranty

Tested for a head gasket leak or cracked head tonight using a NAPA Block Tester. The fluid stayed blue the whole time. I ran the test for over 5 minutes on a hot engine, and under load in reverse in part time 4WD with the brakes applied. I don't think I have a head gasket leak, but maybe this is not a conclusive test?

My experience with the same tester (used the diesel specific fluid, right?) was similar, but since we were getting coolant in the overflow when towing, went ahead with teardown and found obvious leak.

My experience is that the only conclusive test for a head-crack/head-gasket-leak is to pressurize the cooling system (16psi), remove all 4 glow plugs, unplug all 4 injectors, and crank the motor.
If water comes out of any of the glow plug holes you have a problem.

True, but I am not sure that a less severe, but still signicant leak may not be demonstrated with that method.

The Napa kit I have came with blue fluid that the literature claims it will work with gas, diesel, propane, etc..

I ordered a glowplug module since they are cheap and will try that. Also will pressurize the cooling system overnight to see if any coolant leaks into the cylinders.
