Hello all. I have not been here in a while, which is a good sign, as I have had very few problems with the Jeep. That changed last week while I was driving home. Long story short, I was driving at around 60 when I heard a loud clunk and the Jeep shuddered a bit. The engine then died and would not start. I called a tow truck and when he arrived, the driver asked me to try to start it, and to my surprise it started with no problems. However, in less than a mile it died again. I got it towed to a garage, where they found the following:
1. One of the accessory belt idlers was seized. Chances are that the seizing pulley caused the tensioner to go to the maximum, which caused the clunk, but the jury is still out on that.
2. There were no codes thrown.
3. The fuel filter was changed.
4. Oil was changed.
It was running far better, but when I tried to drive it home, the same thing happened. A stall without any warning, as if the key had been turned off. It would only re-start after about 15 minutes and I drove it to a local garage. I am out of ideas. Does anyone here have any idea what it could be? I'd really appreciate it.

Have you tried priming the fuel filter?
Do you get air accumulating in the fuel filter head?
The other possibility is a bad crankshaft position sensor.

I will check the air tomorrow. Would a bad crankshaft sensor throw a code?

it should throw a code but it doesnt always happen.
Basically what happens is the sensor gets too hot and then quits working, engine stalls, and wont re start. Then it cools off and everything acts normal again.

The air in fuel part is easy to test and easy to correct.

It is FIXED!!!!!! It was indeed caused by a bad crankshaft position sensor. Thank-you, Flash.

However, the mechanic did tell me Something that might interest a lot of you. Many Chrysler products including Jeeps have a problem in the anti-theft system that also causes intermittent stalling. Basically, the signal receiver that interrogates the chip inside the key malfunctions, suddenly making the system think that the key is no longer there. Something else to consider...

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Does the security system check the key code on startup only, or does it do continuous checks on a time basis?

From what the mechanic told me, it does checks at an interval. The result is that the car stalls after 15 minutes and you have to wait (until the system resets) until the vehicle will start again. The next time that I go there, I'll ask him for more info. It'll be soon. I need new shocks.

Looks like the security system only checks the key on start up. Started mine with a non coded key, holding the coded key in close proximity to the skim sensor. After it was running for over an hour, I turned the engine off.
