Have just started to get a harmonic vibration, and believe it could possibly be from the front driveshaft (put new u-joints in rear shaft last year). I want to take the front shaft out and drive the vehicle to diagnose the vibe, and would like to know if this is possible on this vehicle. Any inputs/suggestions will be appreciated.

Well, I attempted to remove the front driveshaft to check the vibe as posted above, but ran into an unexpected issue. When taking the bolts out of the shaft's front yoke, gear oil started leaking out of the bolt holes and from around the yoke itself. I expected the arrangement to be like other 4WD vehicles I have and/or have worked on, and that there would be a seal behind the yoke and the yoke to be held on with a nut and for no gear oil to leak out. Not having any replacement gear oil with me at the site, I put the bolts back in and buttoned it all back up.

Still needing to check out the vibe, I need to know if the shaft can somehow be removed without losing the gear oil and, as regards the shaft's rear mounting arrangement, the transfer case oil too. What advice can anybody provide about this?

Thanks!

Steve

???
Which end was oil leaking out of?
The front diff end or the transfer case end?

When I removed my front driveshaft a small amount of very clean oil came out of the front diff end.
It must have been there from when it was built at the factory.
Drove for about a month with my front DS removed. Didnt loose any gear oil.

Flash,

It was the front diff end that leaked the oil. It wasn't a huge amount, but it definitely caught me off guard. I decided to stop at that point out of caution. From your post, I suppose I'll just press on with taking the shaft out and driving it. Thanks for the reply!

I too removed my front driveshaft while I waited for the replacement rear joint which had a busted ball cage. Ran for a couple of weeks without it with no problems.
Do not remember any oil coming out of the front joint when I removed the bolts though???

It's normal. It won't keep leaking.
