My seat (the bit you sit on only) is ripped, its a light grey Vinyl (leather look).

I have just been quoted over £200 for a new driver front seat cover by Jeep Uk!!
I thought he was quoting for a complete seat but no it was just for the bit you sit on.

I have tried breakers yards but all are in bad condition but they do have the passenger side seat cover.
Are these interchangeable?

Although they look the same, the dealer said that they have different P/Ns.

Yes the left and right covers are different.

When shopping around be aware of the difference, at least on this side of the pond, between a) seat covers which go on over the factory seat simply to provide a new look (ex. Jeep logo seat cover) vs. b) seat upholstery which is the actual vinyl or leather cover over the seat padding (usually held in place by "hog" rings).

If the rip is not too bad you could shop around for vinyl upholstery repair tape to fix the rip and then get a seat cover.

Otherwise you can do what I've done in the past which is locate an upholstery shop and have them do up an actual replacement seat upholstery. Off hand I don't know what the cost would be but I'd guess under $100 US dollars. You can save yourself some money if you remove the seat from the vehicle (4 hold down nuts or bolts and at least 1 electric connection) and split it into bottom and back (probably a couple of bolts or nuts - 1 at the pivot point on each side) so you can just take in the bottom part that needs recovering.

I've installed reupholstery kits with no problem but they have been on classic car restoration (65 Mustang and 56 MGA) and I don't see such kits for a recent KJ.

On the Ltd, only the center pleated section is leather. The rest is vinyl. I had a local hot rod custom shop replace the vinyl surround of the seat bottom cushion and install a new inflatable lumbar support bladder. It was about $350 US, materials and labor.
