Hi Guys, hope you all doing great! Ive got a starting problem on my 2009 Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD. Its turning over, but dont want to start. Ive checked the fuel pump by taking of the line entering the fuel filter.
Checked all the fuses, but dont know about the relays. If you guys have any suggestions, it will be much appreciated.

Possible the crankshaft position sensor. I've got more or less the exact same problem currently.

Hi Dan,

Thanx for thr reply, is there a way of testing the sensor?

I think once you remove it, the only way to test it is to heat the sensor up with a hairdryer or the likes and measure the resistance. If it goes crazy, it's had it.
not sure on your 2.8, but my 2.5 is a witch to get to!

Hi Dan, Thanx for the info. Will search google for the location of the sensor and take it from there!

Just removed mine

pretty sure they're all in the same place. Go underneath and you will see the oil filter. look just above and to the side of that and you'll see it. The exhaust bolts just in front of it. You will need to remove the heat shied to gain access

The 2009 CRD has a fuel pump between the tank and the fuel filter?
This is news to me but I suppose Jeep could have eventually decided to fit a lift pump.

Have you primed the fuel filter head to get all air out of the system?
I presume you have the anti-theft SKREEM system fitted....have you tried a different chipped key and do you get any red light or key symbol on the cluster on solid or flashing at you when turning the engine over?

I presume the circuitry is similar to the earlier CRDs so try replace the ASD relay under the hood with an identical one next to it.....check if the ASD relay is actually energizing. You can remove the ASD relay and try jumping pins 30 and 87 together in the relay socket to see what happens.

You need to get codes pulled out at the Dealers or I believe from 2008 the "key" trick was enabled again to pull codes out...fuel starvation problems usually do not post codes.

Could be the cam sensor or the crankshaft sensor but I would first check that there is no air in the system after priming the fuel head...you could fit a clear section of tubing from the output of the filter to see if any air is present.

These are all thumb-suck ideas as I do not know the 2009 KK CRD at all :?

Bill, just some feedback... Im not sure if theres a fuel pump fitted to the 2009 model. When I disconnected the fuel line, on switching the key to the on position, fuel started to flow from the line.
At this stage I cant find my 2nd key, but would it turn the engine if theres a problem with the key? Ive got a OBD scanner, but no errors after scanning(key trick doesnt work). The 2009 model doesnt have the prime pump. Ive replaced the ASD relay with an identical one, but no change.

Everything is the same as before the problem started. No error codes, engine turning over, but just doesnt want to start...

Oh right. did you manage to get it up on ramps or stands and get right under? It is covered by a heat shield, so that at first glance to wouldn't see it. Take a look again at the photos i posted in #7. you will probably see the plug and connector for it first.

Post subject:  Re: Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD not starting

crank sensor possibly was ok, but even if it was, it probably wasn't gonna be long in failing.
I'm much happier now their both changed. They'll be good for at least another 100k miles.
basically mine just stalled as I was driving. I waited 20 secs and it started up again. I drove for about 10 mins after that, idled for 20 mins then drove a further 2 mins then it died again. It never restarted.

Just some feedback... I finally got the location of the crankshaft sensor! Now just have to verify which one is the culprit.

Hi Dan,
If possible, can you please measure resistance(ohm) between the pins of both the sensors that you removed.

Thank you in advance...
