It seems that I have now blown my turbo. I had hoped it was only the hoses, but after wiggling the shaft and looking at the fins it’s the turbo. As I browse through the posts there have been many discussions on Turbo replacements but
I just wanted to make sure there isn’t anything new that I am missing.

What have you done and has it been successful?
For me the GDE turbo is not an option due to its cost.
The Garrett new seems to be what most recommend but it is also expensive.
Has anyone had success with an aftermarket one? I could almost buy three for the price of one Garrett.
Has anyone had success rebuilding?

I purchased a "rebuilt" Garrett from BuyAuto for about $500. I've had it for a couple years and 15k miles with no problems. They also have new Garretts for $1300 and new Chinese for $700. All of them have a one year warranty. They also sell a Stigan that has a 2 year warranty.

There was a member posted recently who used Cherry to rebuild for a pretty decent price.

So what's wrong with the fins? Are they physically damaged.

Mine went 1 1/2 years ago. I replaced it with a Knock off purchased through Ebay for $395. It's operated exactly like the OEM part. Total cost for replacement $455.00 (i had to buy a few tools) + 8 hours labor. The high labor is do to it was the first time I changed one. Now I could do it in three hours.

DO NOT OPERATE YOUR JEEP WITH IT FAILING! The oil drain feeds the #2 journal, operating with reduced oiling capacity will result in premature engine failure. Ask me how I know.

Step 1, buy a can of Kroil and spray every bolt on the thing including the rubber grommet that the oil drain tube feeds in to the block. I recommend twice a day for a week prior to taking it apart. The job will go much faster.

Anyone who can turn a wrench can do this job its not hard.
Also you need a 6" wobbly extension to make your life real easy with the upper right attachment bolt.

Call Oregon Fuel injection....they deal with Garrett and have very competitive prices. I use them.

Yep the fins are all bent up on the air box intake.

I wanted to get feedback from members who have used rebuilt or Chinese turbos. Mine is a ticking bomb at 190,000 KM.
opinions are diverse some say rebuild never work some have had good luck. Same with Chinese turbos too.
On the other hand now a days we can not seem to find 300-400 options on eBay even the knock offs are in 700 range.

Yeah, I know that there have been a number of premature? failures around here but the typical lifespan of your turbo should be at least the number you quoted in miles i.e. >300,000km. It's probably wise to do some homework just in case but by the time you need a new turbo the landscape will probably have changed again.

Unless I had to replace it to sell, I don't believe I'd drop $700 on a knock of turbo from an unknown source when I can get a bnib Garrett for around $1K.
