Yesterday while me and the gf where taking my mother out on the Illinois wine trail for mothers day, I noticed the crd doing something weird. We stopped at a dollar general so my gf could go pee and it felt like. Someone bumped into the jeep. Looked around, didn't see anyone. Then again. I realized it was a miss. Did it a few times every minute to minute and a half. Just one cough each time. Idles fine. Step on the pedal revs fine. Drove almost 400 miles yesterday and did fine. Just randomly hiccups at idle.

Any suggestions on why crd gurus?

I'm going to change the fuel filter today(not sure when last one was changed) when I change oil. I have done the ORM so CEL was on already. Have not check for codes yet. Hopefully its nothing to major, I'm taking a trip to Gatlinburg at the end of this month in it.

First thing to check would be air in the fuel. Do you have a blue electric plug on the right side of your filter head when viewed from the front. If not you have the 1st gen head and really should replace it. FYI new head comes with filter installed.

I assumed the filter head was changed out due to some nice shrink wrap on the right side plug-in pig tail. But it is blue


The fuel filter is a Mopar filter. My gf took it to the local jeep dealer to get oil changes, I have no clue if they have changed it. I can't seem to be able to get it to spin off. I sure don't want to break the plastic housing it has.

On another note. I filled the tank back up with diesel from another service station this morning and have drove roughly 50 miles today and no hiccups or anything.

Yep that's the 2n gen filter head which is good.

Removing the filter can be a bit of a bear. First off remember it has a WIF sensor on the bottom whose wiring pigtail must be removed before trying to remove the filter and that the small inner filter gasket (fits around the threaded shaft the filter screws onto) has a tendency to not come off with the filter so be sure to remove it.

If you can get a filter wrench in there it should come off remembering of course that it's upside down so when looking down from the top you turn the filter what appears to be clockwise to unscrew.

Frankly I prefer to unplug the top electric connections; loosen the hose clamps and push - don't pull - the fuel hoses off; undo the 2 bolts holding the filter head to the base plate; lift it out enough to unplug the WIF wire; and then do filter removal in a bench vise.

Cool. I'll do that. Took a break from the fuel filter and went to rotate the tires, and one of the left front studs snapped. I got that fixed. Checked the CEL codes, nothing other than the maf being unplugged. Have had no missing/hiccups today. I didn't get around to changing the filter, but will attack it next weekend. She went home, now for wrenching on my YJ.

Got a phone call from the gf again. It shuddered a few times in the CVS drive thru. I'm changing the fuel filter this weekend. Hope this is something simple causing this.
