Wow, look at all that room. How much more of a PITA is it to remove all that crap once you do the timing belt. I am going to do it myself soon and would love to pull the head/intake manifold for a good cleaning. Even with only 50k miles it had about a 1/4" thick coating of crap on the walls of the elbow when I put on Weeks elbow kit. |

Sigh, I do kind of miss the days when you could climb into the engine bay and work on the engine with your feet on the ground inside the engine bay with the engine still in place. Straight 6 of course. Shoot today you cannot even see the ground in there. |

Well, the book value for the labor is 6 hours for a timing belt job (removing a TON of stuff that doesn't need to be removed!) and it is about 15 hours for a rocker job and 19 hours for a head gasket. I may be able to greatly reduce the time for each of those, but it is still a LOT of work. I'm just faster because I specialize: The only vehicle that I work on that isn't my own is the Jeep CRD. Cleaning the intake is a good idea, but unless you are also doing the ARP studs and maybe the rockers at the same time - it is a lot more work than it will be worth. The intake will gradually clean itself with the fresh CCV oil coming in (in small amounts, natch) but by not mixing in any fresh soot, what you will be doing is slowly diluting the crud coating the walls. Eventually it will be soft enough to get pulled into the engine and incinerated. Now, if you are game to accelerate that process - I can do the ARP studs and that job in about 9 hours. It is a long day, but it can be done. Tom's head gasket looks GORGEOUS with that copper coat all over it, and I am excited to see the results - namely, the lack of any head gasket leaks! I think he may just have the answer for anyone that does pull the head out, I certainly will do this on a gasket if I have need in the future. More sealant is never a bad thing. |
