EGR removal

Probably going over old ground but just been reading about capping the water supply pipe at the head? Is it safe to cap the that water supply? When I removed my EGR valve I reconnected the hose back to the metal Y above the cam cover. I am not sure if its a good idea to cap it. The more water flowing through the head I would say is better.

I didnt cap mine off, ran the line right back to the Y as well.

So you're letting the water out of the head and you think that'll give you a cooler head? Let the water stay in the head and do its job. Anyway that's controlled by the thermostat.

I wish I examined the head more closely with regard to the water ways and the fitting on the side that feeds the EGR when I stripped and rebuilt my motor.
In plugging that hose you maybe preventing water flowing through the head?

Exactly, allowing the water the exit that port and dump into that "Y" is the correct route.

The port/hose in question was part of the EGR circuit. Blocking it or allowing that water to flow over to the t-stat IMO most likely is a mute point. There's no easy way to measure temp changes so let her run.
The head will cool equally well using either method.

I capped mine AND removed mechanical fan. Only fan on there is the factory electric fan in the front. It never gets above 172°, been 20,000 miles ago...

X2 on capping. I didn't notice a change in temp behavior. There are at least 4 or 5 of us running with it capped.

Maybe someone that has capped it off, and an IR camera can look for a hot spot?

But, I bet if Dieselguys 250 HP engine has survived the mod that it has been proven safe :2cents:

If this engine hadn't been saddled by the epa with the stupid egr, it wouldn't have that port at all. It was just a convenient place to get water.

Next time I am working on the Jeep will cap mine. Any one know what thread size it is, One less hose to go bad

Capped mine over two years ago when I removed the EGR and all associated crap off of the motor! :SOMBRERO:

Without any back pressure and/or restriction of the EGR cooler in this particular coolant circuit, I would be very concerned of just allowing the coolant to simply flow unrestricted back into the "Y" fitting. In effect it may actually allow some coolant to bypass the head and thus lower cooling efficiency where it is needed it most!!! :2cents:

Thanks for the reply. 64 bucks is just crazy. I guess I take the hose barb out and find out the thread size for my self. I guess its probably 14mm same thread that's on the plugs on the main oil line.

The outlet through the thermostat is bigger so more coolant will flow out that direction.
I'm gonna route mine from the side of the head to the heater core.

I think it is 14 fine thread. It was an odd size, so I had to buy one bolt at the parts store and cut it to fit. 16k miles on mine

Thanks mountainman noticed you removed the viscous heater and using a shorter serpentine belt do you have any info on that mod.

Lacabrera , you can plug weld the end of the nipple and your problem is solved. The nipple is just mild steel.
