Seafoamed the CRD today...

...and you wouldn't believe what came out.

I put 6 - 8 ounces of Seafoam into the crankcase and drove about 25 miles total, running the engine on my lunch break and letting it sit all afternoon then driving it home from work, and finally draining the oil. My oil catch pan was full of ... junk. The best way I can describe it is: have you ever seen the stuff that settles in the gutters on your house after the shingles have been weathered for a few years? That nasty, black, pasty, sand-papery looking junk that settles in your gutters? Well that's what this junk looked like that came from my engine. :shock:

This stuff works!

I've been using Shell Rotella T6, and changing every 5,000 miles with a new Purolator Pure One filter. This time I went 7,000 miles. Before I bought the Jeep, it was a Chrysler 48 month lease, so my assumption is that it was serviced at a Chrysler dealership on a somewhat regular basis. I think that I'm going to stick to no longer than 6,000 miles between changes now, and use the Seafoam every few months.

I also put a half-can of Seafoam into my fuel tank. We'll see if it frees up any power in the fuel system...or perhaps it'll clog the system by cleaning things too well. Who knows. :mrgreen:

93,375 miles as of today. :mrgreen:

My guess is that my new oil filter is already full of junk right now....

In another thread the poster had his engine apart for a rebuild and discribed how dirty the inside of it was.

I would have to think the engines and turbos that are biting the dust just might be from junk buildup inside most likely from the EGR devil :grim:

But Chrysler's oil of choice for the CRD might be playing a part in it too :2cents:

Does our CRDs have an intake screen on the oil pump pick up? If so, what is the likely hood of clogging this screen with loosen crud?

I did the same to mine in the spring but I did not get the junk LibertyCRD says he did. mine was black and dark as always. I put mine in one evening and drove to the gym and store then to work the next day. I changed it when I got home from work.

I wonder if the Fumoto drain is holding back crud when we drain.
I don't remember if there was discussion on this in the past.

Well, I flushed out the cold motor this morning using the cleaning solution I mentioned above and strained the oil using a tight knitted clean rag to see what came out.

The oil looked very black. I found lots of dark black thick mushy oil globs and small dark crusty particles, bits of carbon I presume. I don't know.

I will be re-flushing the motor again this afternoon using new synthetic oil and a new filter after allowing the motor to idle for 2 hours or more, to see if anymore particles come out and report back.

The dark particles although hard at first, quickly dissolved between my fingers, into dark spots that looked like particles of burnt ambers.

nope, I'm stickin with the correct AMSOIL multigrade for now but switchin to the WIX filter so I can dump 7 quarts in and not worry about measuring liters

Mmmmmh... Finding gunk & junk in the pan is not comforting one bit! Does this mean the Seafoam might be too harsh a solution for cleaning this engine's innards? That worries me to the point I would not shove this in the pan. Something less reactive, working on a longer timespan, with less solvent would probably be best... I've done some research and found out about Auto-RX, anyone heard about or tried it out?

I would try Seafoam in the tank, just to give the fuel & injection system a good wash. Now it's up to try to find this product in the vicinity :roll:

Idleing is not permitted? The big dogs do it all the time, but our little CRD can't?

I read an article somewhere that talked about how idling a diesel is one of the worst things you can do to it.

I probably won't Seafoam the diesel again for a long time. I'm afraid of knocking particles lose and clogging the oil filter and damaging the engine before I realize what's going on.

Well,

All's well on the Northern front of New England..

She's clean as a whistle inside and out now and she drives great too.

After seeing the crap that came out of the engine, I will definetely be giving the little lady a five minutes turbo diesel engine flush prior to every oil change from now on, just like it says on the instructions.

On another note to Dynopax, the Auto-RX he is suggesting to use instead of the one I used looks to be safe http://www.auto-rx.com/

Will operating a engine too cold from at failing thermostat for a log period of time cause sludge in a diesel ? I know this can be a problem in gassers, due to not getting hot enough to cook off the moisture in the crankcase.

I've wondered the same thing. I don't think there would be significant difference on a regular oil change. After seafoam or gunk treatment I might take mine out. After all, it wouldn't be any more difficult than removing a regular drain plug.

Race, I used to use gunk on a '69 ford pu about every six months. It had 200k miles when I sold it and the oil would stay clean for the full 3k miles. I've wondered about using in on the CRD. Will do it the next change.

IMO, running a diesel cold would create sludge exactly the way it does in gassers.
