Post subject:  CRD will not start after timing and water pump change

I need help in Atlanta. My 2005 CRD had timing change , water pump by my mechanic. not sure what went wrong but it ran one day and stopped in xpressway and will not now start. took to Jeep dealer, they say it is locked up and I need a new motor??$$$?? They could tear apart and fix the one cylinder(? they do not know what is really wrong) but it will cost me 10 to 15K ?? what? It has only 85k miles on it and is prestine shape. I am lost on what to do now. Can Geordi help me out of Savannah. How do I get in touch? I am willing to put up to 3k more into my CRD as I really love her. ( the water pump and timing belt plus install cost aprox 2K). Should I fix her or part her out or sell her as is?? please help this gal in Atlanta. My fix it mechanic has no part of the issue.

Did the Jeep dealer tell you what was the cause of the lock up.

Gina, sorry to hear about your experience.

First, don't take it to the dealer, I question how he came to his conclusion.

We will try to help you decipher what might have went wrong by reading about your experience from our PC's. This is difficult to do and an actual tare down of the engine would be the proper way to go.

But so that we can begin to help you, a good recollection of what you experienced soon after the repair and what you felt and heard at the moments before and after it died may help.

Many of us on this forum know more about this vehicle than most techs and may be able to assist you from afar, so let's see.

Also, can you give us more details about what your mechanic did to perform the work? His response would most helpful. How did he perform the timing belt replacement procedure, what procedure did he follow?

How did the dealer come to his conclusion? Did the tech turn the engine using a wrench and then discover that it didn't move, the engine was frozen?

When you said that the CRD "will not now start", did the engine not turn over (rotate) when you turned the ignition key..... did you hear the engine crank over?

I love my CRD too, and I hate to hear about mishaps like this. It's such a great vehicle when it functions and is repaired properly.

I send you my best wishes for a smooth and economical recovery. :)

Racer.

gggipson - I sent you a PM on how to contact geordi

As to your current situation we need more details such as:
1. how long since the timing belt job.
2. had the mechanic done other KJ CRD timing belt jobs
3. "will not start" - please elaborate. Crank for no fire is not the same as no crank.
4. what does the dealer mean by "locked up"? If in fact the timing went bad the engine is designed to have the rockers fail which means anything from running poorly to crank but no fire to locked up (i.e. when a wrench is applied to the crank pulley the engine cannot be rotated.

Absent a rod poking out of the block it's unlikely you need a new engine but it's obvious if they are throwing around figures like $10-15K that they have an upcoming boat payment. Digging in far enough to check rockers and valves is about 6hrs labor and should ID exactly what's wrong although it is possible an external inspection by someone who knows the engine could ID the problem without pulling it apart.

Not worth asking as to why there was a need for double questioning.... but whatever.
