Should geordi and I have seen several tensioner mounting holes that were helicoiled from the factory. |

Yes it had a factory heli coil that pulled out. I was afraid that too much aluminum got stripped out and that a new heli coil wouldn't stick in there. But with the stud in there it's really tight. |

Helicoil thread repair coils inserted correctly are actually stronger than the original aluminum threads as the coil is larger and the repair threads set deeper into the metal where they are being placed. The coil is much stronger than the aluminum metal around it! Been using standard & metric Helicoils for forty years and have always been impressed by their holding ability....in both aluminum and steel... You may want to use a little Loctite 263 (red type) on the threads of the stud on the mounting end; might make it a little bit stronger??? |

Any reason you left the tang on the heli coil insert after you installed it? |

I think that tang can be bent till it breaks, should have had some small cuts at the breaking point from the factory and with a needle nose pliers you can bend back and forth till it breaks, at least this is how I remember it, but I am not a fan of helicoil and wwdiesel can probably tell you more exactly how to deal with it... |

Looks ok to me, but what caused the original helicoil to pull out? How much force were you using? The correct amount is 28ft-lb to hold the tensioner. The AllData book that my idiot mechanic used on my first engine has it as EIGHTY! Way wrong! Part of the reason why I don't go to that mechanic anymore. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |

Use a punch and hammer. Give it one good hit from the stud side, and it should break right off. It's not necessary to break it if it isn't in the way though. |

There is plenty of space back there, I'd leave that tang alone. It is already built and seems to be OK, and that cover has already been fixed... And cast metals don't like being impacted much. You don't need any more problems with it! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |

Helicoils usually go in tang end first with a special tool which is also used to break off the tang. Never thought of installing one that way before but since I do not have the special tool, will try that way if I need to use one. John |

I've never broken the thing off anytime I've used a helicoil, hasn't been a problem yet. My preference is a solid collar though, I just think those are more secure. |

Mine too, if you don't go nuts torquing the bolt in the collar, it's just perfect, especially for using it in soft alloys like aluminum. I use timesert btw. |

500 miles on it so far. If something were to break, I think it would have done it by now. |
