Post subject: | AC condenser replacement |
I found a leak in my condenser yesterday after running a can of AC recharge through the system. After calling a few places to get some estimates, most of the shops told me the price is a difference of a few hundred dollars if the radiator needs to be moved or not. Does anyone know if the radiator needs to be moved in order to replace the condenser? |

No need to remove radiator but it's likely the mechanical fan and fan shroud will need to be removed to get the serpentine belt off although it may be possible to get to the serp belt tensioner to relieve tension and remove the belt without doing so. If the fan and shroud do need to come out do yourself a favor and cut the bottom 1/2 off the shroud just below the mounting bolt tabs and throw the bottom 1/2 away. FYI you can, with the right tools, remove the fan and shroud yourself and drive it into the shop that way. If you do the removal yourself a) put a towel or piece of cardboard between fan and radiator to avoid punching a hole in the radiator; b) as I recall you will have to tilt the shroud one way or the other to get the tabs past the CAC hoses; c) CRITICAL zip tie the shroud mounting nuts into their retaining slots so they don't get lost AND be sure to reuse the same mounting bolts as length is critical to avoid punching a hole in the radiator. Go to http://colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/ and grab copies of the 05 and 06 FSMs (05 has illustration keys but lacks cooling system data and diagnostics while 06 is the reverse) and look at pg 24-90 of the 06 FSM for removal instructions. |
