Post subject:  Well, was going to wait for the 07 CRD...........
But after finding out that wasn't going to happen I bit the bullet and bought an 06. As this is my first diesel, and my first Jeep ( had a Isuzu Trooper before), I was wondering if there is anything that I should/shouldn't do. I know about the turbo cool down, but I've read on here that some people use additives, disconnect egr and things like that. Any suggestions on what, if anything I should do to make this crd run better and last longer? Thanks. I was a little dissapointed in my first mpg calculation, just under 15 mpg!!! But I was running it pretty hard ( this thing is fun!) and it was filled at the dealer and might not have been complety full. I filled it the other day and have been going easy on the throttle, staying below 70 on the fwy, after 75 miles, the gage is still above the full mark so I do feel a bit better as that was one of the resons for getting it. the old Trooper only got 16mpg's max, and it was a manual.

when i first got my 06, i read on here to get the best mileage was to keep the rpm between 2000-2500 and if possible lock out the OD in town driving to also keep it in between that rpm range as well, seems to work for me. I just got back from Moab and it was about a 900 mile round trip. On the way up I used just a tad over a full tank. id say maybe at the most 1 1/8 tank, im stock all the way around, all i used was power service in the grey bottle and #2 diesel.

I drive alot of highway but I have found that no matter how I drive it my mileage is always above 22mpg. 25mpg is the best I have seen. I run Wide open while getting on the freeway etc. I don't think babying it will help much.

Well, I feel a little bit better. After a trip to Houston for jury duty (50 miles round trip, rush hour both ways) and 2 trips to work, back roads no traffic I got just a little over 21 mpg. That's more in line with what I was expecting.

I always average over 26. I'm usually 27 and change on my trips. I always reach 500+ miles cruising.

The number one thing you need to know is that diesels take a lot longer than gassers to break in and really start delivering the mileage. That you got 15 or so on the first tankful doesn't mean squat as to what you will see consistently after 20,000 miles or so. And yes, it does take 20,000 miles or so.

While it is true that there are precious few CRDs with over 20,000 miles, those that have gotten that many miles will tell you that mileage improves continuously and steadily for at least that long. I've also a Jetta TDI with over 100,000 miles on it, and my experience with it showed steady improvement over the first 20K or so. My first tank on that vehicle was 43 on the highway. Now I average 49 overall, and 55 or so on the highway.

I've only 11,000 miles on my CRD. I got about 18 for the first couple tanks and now get about 24 around town and have gotten as high as 28.5 on the highway. Part of that is getting the engine broken it, and part is learning how to drive it. And one thing to note is that the "sweet spot" is 60 mph: below that and the torque converter won't stay locked up in the highest gear, above that the fact that it has all the aerodynamic efficiencies of a cinder block start to take their toll. I expect to eventually break 30.

Be patient. 15 plus or minus on the first tank is not surprising. It'll get better.

Just filled up with today we had 60 miles highway and 395 city and it took 18 gallons to fill, that is 25 mpg for that tank. Not to shabby at 9000 miles I don't think.

Don't worry, give it a year and you will see the 30's on the highway.
