Have any tips on how to use the install tool? Do I need to oil the seal in any way? The manual says not to even touch the inner seal, but I'm not understanding how to use the tool without doing so.

Replaced mine a couple months ago. Just press it out with a suitable socket and press back in to the correct depth. There is no need for the tool listed for the job. I nearly installed mine the wrong way around. Pays to be able to read Italian lol. Just in case you don't know its a left hand thread for the crankshaft bolt and its very tight. took a 4' bar to release mine.

Luckily I noticed the "Lako Esterno" and the arrow written on it or I would have installed it backwards as well. Did you use any oil on the inner seal?

Mike

Friend of mine is involved in building race engines and he told me to use grease on the inner seal on installation. When you remove the front cover to replace the seal the oil is lost and can take sometime to replenish, hence the grease.

Removing the cover gains access to the vacuum and oil pump. If your replacing the oil seal its worth removing the cover to check the pumps. I gained few extra PSI's replacing my oil pump.

How many miles were on your pump? I need to test my vacuum, hoping maybe that it is the cause for poor braking. Shouldn't the oil pump last for 500k + miles? I might just replace both if I get in there, but I'd like to rob them from one of my spare engines. I guess I'll just check the wear on them.

The oil pump is not protected by the filter any muck sucked from the pan will pass through the oil pump first. My CRD had led a hard life with previous owners very limited services. The pump had some scoring. When I carried out an oil change for the first time the oil was very bad. If your replacing that seal its worth checking the pump. My vacuum pump was fine I would imagine that would last 500+ miles. I would say its unlikely to be the problem with your brakes, maybe a split vacuum hose or check valve. I had a bad brake booster and the vacuum pump is so good it was pulling the brakes on. Bad seal in the booster.
