So here I have a factory engine that has a 2 hole gasket, but the liner protrusion is in spec for no hole, and then I have a head gasket that a stealership failed at multiple times, and it has a one hole, where the measurements also fall in the no hole specs.

Am I measuring in the wrong spot? The manual says the piston crown I think, 5mm from the edge. I think this is 5mm from the edge on the highest part of the piston???

My last question is, can I get by with a two hole on a no-hole spec engine? I think it's just a tiny difference in compression that we're talking about here right? Bigger is ok, smaller and a valve might smack a piston?

Thanks for any insight :JEEPIN:

The liner protrusion does not impact the head gasket thickness. The head gasket is determined by an average of the piston protrusion. It sounds like you're measuring in the right spot.

Thanks for the clarification :JEEPIN: Keith agreed that it's just a matter of compression. I guess I'll ask the diesel masters if they think that compression difference will make a noticeable difference in performance.

Well, just so everyone is warned, I did find one instance of a guy who used a different sized gasket, .08mm thicker, and he reported hard starts and terrible performance. I was thinking of going from a no-hole to a 2-hole because that is what I have on hand, but that's a .2mm increase! I think I better not.

I'm still kind of stumped though, because the factory engine I have sitting on the stand, has a two hole, and the piston protrusion is on the lowest end of a no-hole, and I know that engine ran excellent... :dizzy:

The guy that reported the terrible performance from a thicker gasket was referring to a 2-3 liter Land rover diesel, but I can't see that making much of a difference in detonation versus our 2.8's....only I'm talking about a much larger increase in volume. hmm :?:

Where did you buy that 2 hole gasket? If it was ID Parts, they have an excellent return policy. They allowed me to send mine back when I realized I would have to rebuild the engine, and gave me a credit on my account which is used to order the correct gasket when the time came.

Yeah, it wasn't ID parts, it was overseas and I ordered one of each size. They sent me three 2 holes...

Well it sounds like VM Specialists sent you the wrong gasket? I did the same thing, I needed no hole he sent a 1 or 2 hole, and I was in a bind and threw it in and it starts a lot harder then ever, and my other CRD with the original gasket and ARP studs starts like a champ. I am probably going to pull it off again this winter. According to VM Specialists it is not a big deal, Yeah Right? :banghead:

:BINGO: :banghead:
Thanks Flman, from what I read, two sizes is going to be a large difference in compression ratio! Or even one size for that matter. Now what's up with my factory one that has a two hole when it barely makes the spec for a no-hole :5SHOTS:

You can always put the gaskets up for sale here at a price that cant be beat, it will help with some of your loss.

Somebody used what they had on the shelf, obviously - Or someone else has been in that motor without your knowledge, and without their own knowledge of what they were doing. The fact that engine runs well is probably pure luck, imagine how well it could run with the right gasket!

George at VM Specialist is a decent guy, but I don't think he is fully on the ball all the time. Could be he is just too busy or that the engines over there have less fluctuation than ours do, but that gasket absolutely makes a difference.

The gasket itself doesn't really "compress" when being installed, since it is laminated layers of steel, the layers have no place to go. It needs to be sized correctly.

Selling here is probably a pretty good idea. I might even be a customer for one, depending on what I discover when I pull apart the CRD that I just bought. That should happen this week.

Yeah, funny thing is I have an engine that had a two hole. Kinda scary to put the no-hole, but that's what I measured. Time to go re-measure :grim:
