I had a collision and crashed the rear light of my KJ. . I wonder if it is possible to just replace the outer part, just the red/transparent cover that is damaged and not the entire light fixture which is still ok. Is that possible or you just have to buy the entire thing? This is how it looks after the crash: Image

As I know, you need to buy the whole new unit. But with the prices on eBay, I'm pretty sure you can get a very decent price for a brand new one, even if it's made in China. I replaced my side mirrors with Chinese eBay new ones (I got heated mirrors as I had just normal unheated) and this is the 3rd year I have them, look like first day I got them. I was thinking they will fade and look bad, but apparently my fear was not justified.

Couldn't you find it at a local picknpull or car-part? The local picknpull near me has a KJ with the lights from what I recall and they only charge $16 or so. Might be worth checking locally.

Or this, which is cheaper. If you're lazy like me, you can go on eBay and also look for a used part, but chances are you'll spend more than 16 bucks, which is a great deal.

You can pick up new aftermarket replacements from RockAuto for about $60 each. I took my right one out a few years ago on a concrete post . The Tyc replacement was a perfect match to the original but not to worry I also got to replace the left one with a matching replacement a couple of years later after backing the handle of my snowblower through it .

Just had the same thing happen.
id parts, Morris, Tasca, Rockauto as noted all sell them.
Some Chinese some Made in USA.
Whole unit should fit straight in unless the socket distorted as mine did.
Mine came with incandescent bulbs so I'll have to change these out and install the LEDS.

Lowest new item I saw in the last week or so was about USD45.00.
I went Mopar Original for my own silly reasons.
Thing I hated so much was the so called bumper bar gave no protection from a very heavy swinging gate that swept in high winds from the side and then the protective plastic so-called "protector" finished the job. I'll make one of them out of Stainless.
I have the joy of re-sizing part of the socket also given the poor level of protection.

So-called bumper just pushed in like butter so I've brought forward my replacement fabrication job.
At a crawl I'd rather it just stop suddenly than putty itself in on itself. Bumper did spring back to shape - must be that great memory plastic they use and just looks scratched.

Thanks for the anecdotal posts about how this happened to some of you - I'll stop beating myself up now.

Compared to some we get off lightly.
Been looking at later models whilst on the road since this happened and they don't even have rear bumpers at all - just sweep straight into a huge million dollar panel.

Ah, yes, these bumper covers are great. I turned the corner of mine inside out at the same time. I just set up a 350W halogen lamp about 12" away from it for about 20 minutes and then popped it right back out again from behind. Apart from some minor scratches you wouldn't know it had been hit,

Now bet you can't do that with your fancy schmancy LED work light

I prefer to buy original/genuine/oem parts, so I went to this website and it actually offers 2 options and I don't understand what the difference is:

One is this: http://www.factorymoparparts.net/jeep/l ... -lamp-assy
TAIL LAMP ASSY - 2005 JEEP LIBERTY (5KJ40RXFAE)
SHOP FOR RELATED PARTS IN COMBINATION LAMPS
List Price: $245.00
You Save: $75.95 (31% off)
Sale Price: $169.05

And the other one is this: http://www.factorymoparparts.net/jeep/l ... -lamp-assy
TAIL LAMP ASSY - 2005 JEEP LIBERTY (55157061AG)
SHOP FOR RELATED PARTS IN COMBINATION LAMPS
List Price: $174.00
You Save: $54.40 (31% off)
Sale Price: $119.60

They look the same, but their part number is different. So, which one I should buy?

For left lamps, 2005 parts list says:
LAMP, Tail Stop Turn
55157061AC - Left
55157063AC - Series H, P - [ABE], Left
5KJ41RXFAB - [MXG], Left
5KJ45RXFAB - [MXG,ABE], Left

So, Series H = Sport; P = Limited.

[ABE] = Export

Wasn't able to locate the [MXG] code anywhere.

If yours is an export it probably has rear fogs which the U.S. Models do not have.

Wow, so much advice given and not even an acknowledgement or thank you...gotta love the internet!

Look, if you have the export version and you have a fog light switch on the inside, you'll need to go to Europe to get the proper taillight. A European dealer probably has them available, but be prepared to pay in terms of original acquisition and shipping if you can track it down.

If you don't care, use the US version and don't use the rear fog light. Most owners in the US who have a rear fog light, that is European cars, don't know they have it, don't know when its on and couldn't care less that they are blinding people driving behind them.

Before you try to track down the Euro version though, make sure your taillight has it incorporated into the housing. It may be on the other side or may not need it.

What do you mean by the fog tail light? i've seen photos of the rear lights of the American version on it looks exactly as the one I have. So, do you mean there is something inside the light that is different.?
I've posted a photo of how my rear light looks like on my first post and do you think it is different to the American version?

Getting that correct part is one of the reasons I like to shop at Tasca for my certain of my parts as well as excellent communications - they will match to your VIN so there are fluff-ups. You get exactly the right part. Pricing for genuine parts is fair as is freight. My Right Hand unit was USD119.34 plus tracked shipping and yes mine is a Cherokee Sport in Australia.
As always from Tasca Parts Center I got perfect fit, perfect communication, tracking and it was quick.
Yes probably going to Europe would work but to my mind the VIN is absolutely necessary to ensure correct supply.
USD170 for OEM is much too much - that is Tasca's list price.
