| Post subject: | Anyone have the priming pump in the fuel filter head fail? |
I installed the 2nd gen filter head on my wife's 2006 CRD at 49k miles and the Jeep currently has 71k miles. I changed the fuel filter in the CRD this morning and ran into a snag. Before I replaced the filter, I decided to check for air in the system, so I pumped the priming pump and cracked the bleed and got nothing. I repeated this process a few more times and still did not get a flow of fuel or air from the bleeder. I removed the filter and it was full of fuel. I was a little confused by this, but I proceeded to install the new filter. I installed the new filter and proceeded to prime the filter by pumping until I felt resistance and occasionally cracking the bleed while the plunger was depressed and got no flow of air or fuel from the bleeder. I cycled the pump several hundred times, but still felt no resistance and no flow from the bleeder. I removed the new filter and it was empty........completely empty I decided that maybe the priming pump had failed. I kept the original fuel filter head with 49k miles on it. I removed the 2nd gen fuel heater from the new(er) fuel filter head and installed it on the original fuel filter head. I installed my newly assembled fuel filter head on the CRD, pumped the priming pump several times and bled off the air without a problem. The Jeep started and is running without a problem. Has anyone else had the priming pump in the fuel filter head fail? |

I had this problem on one of mine, but now they both have lift pumps. If you can pressurize the fuel tank with the exhaust of a shop vac you can get it to bleed, that is what I used to do. |

I recall one post where the seal on the pump shaft failed and leaked fuel. I presume there is some sort of one way check valve in the pump mechanism so as the pump is operated it draws fuel from the tank and the valve prevents flow back to the tank. In your situation it would appear that valve failed. |
