This is a repost I started a thread in the wrong place ...forgive me .

I have already ordered the cam shaft lock tools .. for the timing belt job

I did took the plunge and just purchased an 05 KJ with 86K out of state (Co) . Little to no rust, maintenance records car fax and safety inspection done.

picked it up for $6900. shipping to Ca $625
so I am in it for 7700 after paying a third party for inspection

The known bad.
Drivers seat sensor not reading, Could be the prior owner bypassed the switch by twisting a pair. ?
The serp belt is about to go.
Needs a engine bay cleaning
Seat covers easy enough
tires
hitch recall not done
Bluetooth head unit ..lol

Things I know I need to order before driving the KJ when it gets delivered. going for reliability first then upgrades with the suspension

I have used IDparts for my TDI .. any other vendors I should use please speak up

TB kit and tools
water pump
Pulleys
EGR delete kit or tune ... GDE or ?
sunco TC
Rockers
APR studs
head gasket

I so happy to be a diesel owner again

You don't need to replace the head gasket unless there is an actual leak. Search on the posts by Papaindigo for a recent telling of the instructions for a cold engine test.

IDparts is the supplier of choice, no worries there.
GDE for a very comprehensive tune, but $$$. Yeti (tech section) has an alternative tune, I don't really know too much about that one other than it is nearly free.

EGR delete "weeks elbow kit" is the preferred method, stage 2 version completely removes the EGR from the engine, but even just the elbow seals it off. You will need a tune to eliminate the idiot code from the system before Kaliforniastan inspection.
Rockers are a replace-as-needed item, so you might not need them at the moment. You will see when you get the valve cover off. Plan on the valve cover gasket twisting itself into a pretzel when you remove the cover.

Save your money on the suncoast converter, look through the recent threads in this section - someone posted a part number for a Ram TC that slots in for $118 or so. Can't beat that with a stick! If the CRD doesn't feel like you are driving over rumble strips when you put your foot into the accelerator while at mid-throttle / ~40mph then you may not need the converter. Some have had replacements that were the recall, others did it themselves.

Thanks Geordi,

I take delivery next week. I plan on running over to the smog shop have the cert done (check for codes) then promptly pull it in the garage where she will be given some TLC with some light bondage.

I was just reading the weeks elbow kit threads, I did the same on my tdi and the upsolute tune. It looks like I will jump all in and purchase the stage II kit and send my ecu in at the same time.

My course of action

smog it
pull the front end off
TB and pulleys serp belt
water pump
thermostat
spark plugs ... lol just kidding
hoses
IC pressure test
Cold beer

The TC is secondary but with the tune im sure i am going to need it sooner than later.

worse case pull head put new studs and gasket check rockers.

Might as well order the GDE tune or remove the ECM and ship it to Keith while you're getting all your work done.

As some stated; get one of the free tunes by Yeti, they are awesome! Costs, less than 50 bucks for a DRB cable on eBay. He has some great tunes for 05's with the Weeks kit installed, (FCV & EGR valves removed).
Read all about it on this thread:

Quite a few of us on this forum are running one of his tunes with great success on both increased power, performance, and increased fuel mileage. :-)r

Factor in glow plugs as ceramics are known to disintegrate and create engine block issues and ARP head bolts if you do not want to deal with random head gasket issues.Enjoy :JEEPIN: .

Post subject:  Re: First CRD 05 with 86k getting my parts list together

Congrats on a good deal! Keep a close eye on the temp on any serious grades, especially offroad at slow speed as you might want to add a hayden heavy duty fan to it. The stock fans are garbage and could cost you a head gasket or worse.

Check the play on the turbo, it could be toast if the cool down period wasn't followed, and that usually ends up destroying the $5k engine :grim:

It will likely clunk when you take off the line due to bad motor mounts, and transmission mount may be bad also.

:D

Took delivery today and spent a couple hours going threw the initial check list.

Bad ... a couple small dings, cloth seat stains, makes a clunk noise .. either drive line U joints or ?
Really not a big deal.

First NO RUST thank god
Runs very smooth
Oil change ... mobile1 0-40w
air filter ....
oil filter ...
Looks like someone changed the fuel heater leads ... unplugged it any way
removed the block heater :ROTFL:

Passed smog .lmao visual only with one question "any Mods? " my answer No .. ok here is your cert.
Now I have the smog check engine light. should clear on the first long drive.

Once I get the CEL cleared I complete the ORM.

Ran the transfer case threw the gauntlet ... shifts fine in and out of positions.

Filled the tank, added 2 stroke oil 12oz.

Before you clear the codes, you may want to read them first just to be sure there is nothing wrong.

rear end clunks tend to be

a slip yoke that needs to be greased (I've been doing about 50k miles)
rear upper control arm - ball joint dies (have to replace the entire unit -but commonly 100k + miles)
u joints might - but normally just vibrate (replace with grease-ables about 50k and grease every oil change)

The fuel heater leads indicate that you have the updated fuel filter head. Good.

The crusty MAP sensor suggests you need to do something about the EGR. I would recommend the GDE Hot Tune. See:

Well, did the splines with lithium grease. Still got a slight clunk ..not as bad but tolerable for now.
I just happen to own Stainless steel zip ties and gun so the job was not too awful. Then I got real motivated and knocked stuff blocking my exhaust ... time for a new free flow muffler. :goink:

New TC going in next week. Followed by TB, goodies and a tune. I purchased the usb ob2 cable... I am going to have to ask one of the forum members to walk me threw the flash process or pay GDE for their tune.
