 Post subject: Fuel problem??

Hey guys,

I have recently ran into some kind of fuel problem. Fuel is not getting to the fuel filter assembly. When I was running it would suck the plunger down and then when not running it would slowly release the plunger. I have ran all the fuel out of the filter and now it won't start. I have yet to drop the take to investigate. I do have a lift pump mounted back by the tank(not in tank) and I can here it cycle.

My next plan of attack is to drop the tank and investigate what is going on. Is it possible the pick up tube could be plugged? Or is it a bad fuel filter assembly? I have a brand new fuel filter on and the assembly is the version 2

Start with the easy stuff first which does not immediately include dropping the tank. I assume the tank has fuel. If yes then since you have an inline lift pump back by the tank then I assume you cut the fuel line to splice the lift pump in. If yes go back to the lift pump and see if it's clogged or if the fuel line from the lift pump to the filter is clogged. If yes fix. If no then it's time to drop the tank.

Edit - another possibility. If you used cheap fuel line to splice in the lift pump (e.g. other than marine grade diesel rated fuel line) you may have a "soft" fuel line on the tank side of the pump. Decades ago I saw this happen on a gasser where the engine mounted fuel pump could barely suck gas from the tank because when it sucked the fuel line collapsed.

Thanks papa for the quick reply. I think I have covered all of the easy things. I did re-route my fuel line to check fuel pump failure since I'm not sure the pump is flow through in a failure. I'm gonna hook the pump back up and see if it will get fuel up front. I do kinda think the latter part of your reply. I'm not sure if I got marine diesel grade. It's the only line my local hardware store had and I can compress it fairly easily by hand??

I installed the pump 6 months ago to cure the priming every morning. And just recently I was pulling a 4000lb trailer and all of the sudden limp mode and no fuel. I was able to unhook the trailer at the nearest house and granny drive the jeep back home

Fuel line from a local hardware store that you can compress easily with your hand. I'll lay odds that you have found the problem. I recommend marine grade that meets SAE J1527 type A1-15 marine (USCG) specs or ISO 7840 Type A-1 such as Shields Series 368 from West Marine. Not cheap (can be up to $6 a foot in short lengths) but you don't need much. Will not compress by hand, will barely compress in vise. That cheap floppy stuff is prone to collapse and will degrade and leak fairly quickly, been there done that.

Any decent boating supply, auto parts store, diesel repair shop should be able to provide acceptable fuel line.

All that's required is rubber fuel line that is Diesel-rated, not gasoline-rated - each fuel requires specific compounds, and Diesel fuel definitely does not require the currently-used compound for gasohol, as used in the spark-infested KJ's
