With all of the time and money I've put into my CRD lately, I'd like to keep it for a long time. This has me thinking toward the future: how reliable are these vehicles when the odometer passes 200,000 miles? What issues are people facing? How many miles on your CRD? I'm interested to hear from high mileage owners about their experiences, problems, praise, etc.

The crucial factor here is the EGR delete. Those who have not done it should expect more engine problems at higher miles than others with a stock engine.

If you respond, include the mileage on your CRD and if you've deleted the EGR via GDE, Weeks, etc. Cheers!

Suggestion. Get rid of that K&N filter. The reason they breathe so well is they DONT filter worth a crap!

I'm currently running a K&N. Is there any evidence to back up that claim? Anyone else have issues?

Recently a diesel expert on here (LOST) told me that they are good IF maintained properly. I'm actually considering one now, but then again, I think Keith said that the engines aren't starved for air until 3800rmp's or so, and that's the HEAD limiting things, so is there anything to gain? I'd like to hear more expert opinions on the subject. Maybe someone can dyno one with and without a K&N? That would be one really nice easy efficiency mod. Anyone have one of the fancy fuel measurement devices and feel like testing for mpg's?

I only have 18x xxx on my crd. Nothing noteworthy but a bad turbo and maybe rockers. Maybe these engines get better as they age as they "hone" the cylinder walls for a better seal?

I have 138,xxx on my '05 CRD. I've deleted the egr by GDE, replaced the turbo hoses with samco's, did the elephant nose mod, replaced the TC with a suncoast, and it just broke the rockers, I believe (hope). :furious:

I pray it it isn't the bottom end....

I've seen the rockers break at 88k, so you didn't do too bad.

At 160,000 miles my rocker arms were still in great shape.
But my head was cracked.

Where could i get some replacement rockers? Anyone have a good source, along with whatever else I would need to do the replacement? Any good advice? I really didn't need this right now but it happens... :banghead:

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hmm, thanks for the post. Now I'm wondering how restrictive the AC delco is, and how many people are using them? I also wonder if the difference between Wix and the Delco's make any measurable difference in wear.

Don't skip the ARP head studs or you will probably regret it. Read the whole thread about them or at least the part that describes the 1 for 1 install. Best $350 you'll ever spend :2cents:

If you click on the link - lots more data including restriction

- these were tested for Duramax - don't think anyone's added wear data

- but more dirt in - is not good.

Hey AT, I wonder if that test includes Amsoils EAA series of filters? The ones with the new PTFE material?

Crap, what's the story on the rockers? Ive got 115,000 on my truck. The EGR system has been bypassed via provent
since 7,000 miles. I Hope that makes a difference!

My '05 CRD is approaching 180,000 miles and I am on my 2nd turbo since 87,000 miles. Recently did the full weeks delete and wished I done that years ago. It made a difference and I believe I had a exhaust leak in the egr piping. I have been running a Provent since almost from the beginning and recent inspection of the inlet to the turbo was oil free and no axial play in the turbine shaft. The fuel head has been replaced and the TC with the Euro version. Most of my bucky-buck at 50-65 crusing speed went away with the Euro TC and the weeks deletion. The only time I experience the shudder now is when I come off of interstate cruise speed of 75 mph and attempt to go 50 on the county roads. Next up is the carter tank pump, probably will do that when I replace the timing belt and water pump at 200K miles. I am looking forward to see what the higher temperature thermostat will do when Turbo Diesel Freak ships mine in the next production run. I average 24-26 mpg highway driving but it drops to ~20 mpg in the winter.

If you have to go in to replace the rockers, for sure install the ARP head studs at the same time!!!!
As to the K&N, I recently removed mine and went back to the paper filter as I discovered the K&N filter oil treatment was putting an oil film on my MAF and tripping a P0101 code every so often. Removed the K&N and replaced it with a paper filter and cleaned the MAF and intake tube with MAF cleaner and no more codes tripped...

Yeah, after reading that test that was linked above, I'll be avoiding K&N's also, especially if the MAP doesn't like the oil. For the record though, I bet for 99% of people who almost always drive paved roads in areas that aren't SUPER dusty, that the K&N's would be good unless they mess with the MAP of course. I'd try one, but I run offroad all the time.

Let us not forget the bottom line: this is a Diesel engine. Sure, it can wrap up to 3,800 revs, but should only be done under emergency circumstances, and only when absolutely no other alternative is available. Your torque peak is at 1,800 revs. At 2,000 revs, you are running about 72 mph. There is not a good reason to drive this engine past 2,500 revs.

If you want speed and performance, versus efficiency and grunt, go buy a gasser. If you drive the CRD like a gasser, you'll end up with blown head gaskets, fried turbos, broken rockers and the like.

165,000 miles: original everything (timing belt & associated hardware changed), +GDE Eco tune

I'm hoping after doing a complete rebuild on my engine and installing the ARP studs along with an Eco Tune from mile zero, mine will be as reliable as they should have been.

I for one have not asked anything more than for my Libby to be as reliable as I can make it. I haven't abused her, in fact I've done most of the mods recommended for it since I've bought it. All I use the Libby for is a daily driver with occasional pulling of a trailer for getting to the places I ride my 4 wheeler. I still lost the rockers at 138,xxx miles. I have a Dodge 2500 Cummins that I use for all the heavy stuff. I've had diesels for years, so I know their strengths and weaknesses.

Implying that we abuse our rigs because something broke and it hasn't happened to you is frankly irritating. If anything you are fortunate, so far. :2cents:
