Diesel Engine Completely lost all power.............
I could use and would appreciate any help. Have a 2006 Liberty with 128,000 miles on it. After spending thousands keeping the other parts of the liberty working (transmission torque converter mods, brakes, alignment, tires, umpteem window regulator replacements, ABM system malfunctions etc.), I was driving under the normal full power and the jeep lurched and lost all power. I was able to creep the 1/2 mile back home at about 2 or 3 mph and then had to get to the airport, so I haven't looked at it yet. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could have happened? Some pertinent details:

1. I did the timing belt at about 98000 miles (30000 miles ago)
2. I just got he truck back from a very good mechanic who helped stop an ABM brake malfunction where there was a wheel sensor setting off the ABM lights and detuning the engine until the computer tripped the warning lights and turned off the ABM system. He stopped the issue by switching the two wheel sensors in front. The possible fix was taking them out and cleaning them in the process of switching them. Did not put in new sensors.
3. There was no big smoke blowout that I could see
4. For the past few months, I think the sound levels from the engine have been getting louder or at least have been changing frequency etc. Hard to explain but something like less of the cool diesel hum and a bit more clanking as the old MB engines did in the 60s and 70s.

I haven't been on this site in a while but hope the experts are still participating. Lot of good info on this site.
Thanks.

Will the engine start and run?
A clogged fuel filter will cause a loss of power but what you describe sounds pretty severe.

Start with a fuel filter first, and see what changes. Pre-fill the filter with Power Service in the silver bottle before you put it in, and that will wash through the pump and lines and may clear any buildups there too.

Check your CAC hoses and the hose from the air filter to the turbo are not torn or split.

Try to get codes pulled...may be going into Limp Mode for some reason. :?

Thanks for the replies. I've been traveling and haven't had time to check the fuel filter and cac hose. I hope that's all it is. The engine is all I like about the vehicle anymore. Without a good engine, I will have a lot of good parts to offer to this LOST group.

Update on the low power with the engine acting like it threw a rocker arm or something. I got back from a week trip, started the liberty right up as if nothing happened. So to you experts out there, do you think the computer threw some sort of code that temporarily cut the engine power? I plugged in my code reader and had no errors.

The incident reminded me of when my dog didn't want to go for a bike ride he would just sit down and act sick. When he felt like running you couldn't stop him. My Liberty may have heard me verbally criticize it and just wanted to irritate me.

Any suggestions on what happened?

That sort of fault sounds like something electrical, wiring or computer problems.
The 06 has a known problem with wiring harness shorts, which can be intermittent,
on the harness that runs behind the fuel filter. I'd look there first. I'd bet you'll find a rubbed wire
there.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to clean out the fuel system and check the wiring harness when I get back. That reminded me I did have the liberty stop working a few years back and had to tow it to a dealer. They discovered a fusible link in the harness had broken apart. At the time I never would have thought to look.

Such a nice engine in such a poorly made vehicle. . I hope fiat chrysler has more integrity and pride than chrysler Mercedes did
