Thought I'd pass along a point of wear & maintenance item. My wife began hearing a "chirping" noise on here CRD (125K miles) from the engine compartment. Really couldn't trace the exact location except it was coming from the serpentine belt route and it seemed to be on the passengers side. The alt. clutch had some dust in it but no chunks as the Youtube video shows also it free wheeled one direction & was "springy" the other. So I thought it might be the bearing on the tensioner, so I replaced that bearing only (it's the same bearing/pulley as the other 2 in the belt circuit) yet the chirp was still there. It was at this point I noticed the belt was riding at the front side of the tensioner pulley and the tensioner arm looked a little off kilter (leaning towards the front of the engine at the top). So I removed the AC pulley & then remover the entire belt tensioner assembly. The spring pivot shaft and accompanying steel washer, on the front, had worn itself into the softer die-cast housing and this was the source of the chirp. The gap between the 2 large die cast components, which contains the heavy spring, was unequal in space from the top to the bottom, wider at the top (as seen from the installed position) and narrower at the bottom. This caused the assembly to lean outward at the top which causes the belt to ride on the front edge of the pulley. There's no fix for this wear, the whole tensioner has to be replaced. The dealer or Other Jeep/Chrysler sources want well over $230 for this tensioner (05072440AB) but I was able to locate one from IDParts for $160 made by the same manufacturer as the original, Litens. I also decided to replace the Alt. clutch too, but be careful, there are different styles available for the same model & year even though they have the same part number (53013554AE or AF). Some are flat on the back and others have a 1/10" protrusion that will throw off the belt alignment, those with the protrusion also have a larger threaded hole down through the center of the clutch than mine does. |

One note want to add about the alternator pulley is that there is a steel bushing the pulley on the side closest to the alternator. The bushing from the old unit was stuck onto the shaft of the alternator & I could not remove it so I had to pull the bushing off the new pully to properly attach the new pulley. Also the new part with the suffix of AF worked perfect from my old one which was AE. |
