Post subject:  Intermittant Turbo

Just installed a new turbo during a timing belt change and a new map sensor. The bearings in the old one were shot. The smoking appears to have abated but I still am getting poor or no response from the turbo until I drive the jeep of 5-20 miles. Then the turbo kicks in and she runs normal until I turn her off. There are times when I can feel a subtle shift in the idle, and I know the turbo has dropped out. This has been happening for a while and my mechanic is starting to think harness and is worry it could cost me hundreds for dollars to trouble shoot.

I will check the codes tomorrow. In the past she has always thrown the standard EGR and Turbo codes. My check engine light is always on (for the past 70,000 miles). We are able to get it off to pass inspection, but then it comes on very soon with, again, the standard turbo and egr codes.

Any one else have this problem? It would be nice to have my turbo immediately!

Hoses were checked and are good.....Modulator or solenoid?

Ok...here are the codes..

Brand new sensor....P0101 and P0102
Brand new turbo....P1256,P0299, and P0069

My mechanic is listed on this site as a recommended mechanic. He has done a great job so far with keeping my CRD in shape.
At this point the turbo does not run for the the first 30 minutes or even two hours and then when it kicks in, it smokes unless I run at 3000 rpm.

Of course no real power until the turbo kicks in and then she runs well at high rpm.

Ron will be running the codes and, I am sure checking connections. These symptoms are the same symptoms before I had the turbo replaced.($4,000 for turbo and timing belt and such)

These are MAF codes.
Lost of folks drive with their MAF unplugged and that does not affect drivability.

P1256 = I dont know, doesn't show up as a chrysler code
p0299 = turbo underboost
p0069 = pressure sensor on the side of the air filter lid. Its either unplugged or not working. Can sometimes cause problems with poor acceleration.

My recommendations are:
1. remove, inspect, and clean or replace the MAP sensor on the engine.
2. inspect all the turbo vacuum control components. That is all the vacuum lines, two control solenoids, and replace the little air filter.
3. check all electrical connections to the MAF and the sensor on the air filter lid.

And BTW,

If you really want this engine to last a long time, find a way to disable, block, or remove the EGR valve.

You may also want to inspect the intake elbow/FCV for excessive buildup of crud that may be choking the engine.

OK....just picked up the Jeep. They replaced seals and a few solenoids. First drive, the turbo did not kick on for about 1 mile. Better than before. She did not smoke at all. Next time out, no hesitation with the turbo.

I will clear the codes and see what comes up. Looks like we are gaining on her!
