is my water pump bad

what are the symptoms of a failing water pump? my crd has been using about 1/2 gallon of coolant every month for about a year. i have never been able to spot the leak. it's not going in the crank case or cylinder. two weeks ago it caught me by surprise and over heated. i poured almost a gallon of coolant in before the reservoir was full. now the leak is faster and it tends to overheat if driven for more than 20 minutes. and by "overheat" i mean that it starts to approach the redline, but has never gotten there.

99% chance it's the head gasket. These things need ARP head studs just like VW's to keep the high compression contained for the life of the engine.

The water pump losing that much fluid would be obvious under the jeep. They can leak a little, but usually on these they just lock up from bearing failure and take out the timing belt...

Loosing coolant sounds like a head gasket. Typically when a pump goes it seizes up and then breaks the timing belt so you would know it. It could be possible although I have never heard of an instance that the thermostat might be stuck shut.

had it pressure tested today. the water pump bearing was out. so it leaked fast while running and super slow while sitting.

If it's caught on time, bearing won't seize but would leak. Lucky catch I guess...

Hopefully that's just not what the mechanic told you, and replaced it, or maybe a a thermostat gasket, or leaky hose... I haven't seen these water pumps leak like standard pumps. Is there even a weep hole? I think if water leaked past bearing it would lock up in just a few miles...

My bet is another leak, or HG. Unless OP witnessed the repair, or has a trustworthy mechanic :ALONE:

No, it will wear the bearing until there is slop enough to remove tension from the belt and then break rockers from valve contact. This can happen over a longer period of time than instantly and not lead to a direct seize or belt break.

No, its a really bad idea not to replace the water pump when doing the timing belt. Just like its a bad idea not to replace the timing belt at 100k.

I agree, but what a bummer if you get a pump that doesn't make it that far. I know I've heard of a few that locked up (or slacked the line) and took out the belt, but I wonder if any of them were prior to 100k? I'm on schedule to change the whole mess at 80-90k as cheap insurance.

I just noticed that I never reported back. My timing belt was due to be changed at the time so I replaced both. The leak quit

I can agree with you. My uncle had this happen to him before he passed and i bought the jeep. So if ur pump actually goes and you can tell No. U cant baby it to the mechanic lol
