| Post subject: | Steering wheel shake |
The other day, I was stuck in very slow traffic on a motorway - slow but not stopped. It was a hot day (for England) and the temp gauge moved about 2 marks over the half mark, so heater on and window open. As we moved forward, the steering wheel started to shake noticeably. Once we could get moving properly, this disappeared. Does anyone have any ideas why and what I need to do to stop it happening again? All ideas gratefully received. Adrian |

Rapid or slow shake? Speed before vs after? Can you duplicate? Could be as simple as road surface causing slight front wheel twitch resulting in steering wheel twitch otherwise could be any of a variety of front end issues |

Speed before - slow, about 10mph, while the temp gauge was over the half mark. Shake very noticeable and fairly quick. After it cooled, (even driving slow), not a twitch. And no, I haven't been able to replicate it. |

Odd I have no clue Probably can be ignored unless it happens again but do check out lug nuts for tightness |

Nope. Tyres are nearly new, balanced and correctly pressured - but thanks for the suggestion. Hopefully it was the road surface - not noticeable at speed (I've driven over this stretch god knows how often) but an issue at slow speeds. Its odd how it coincided with the engine temp rising though. |

Power steering fluid getting too hot maybe? Is the fluid low? Either could possibly cause a shake. |

Funny you should say that Jiesel, its gone in today for a full flush/replace of the ps fluid. I was looking back over my service records over the weekend, and couldn't see that the fluid had ever been changed - the level had been checked, but the fluid hadn't been replaced. Thanks for the idea though, I hadn't thought of that as a possible cause. |

try greasing your caliper pins. This happened to me and I found them corroded. After greasing them the wobble went away... |

Thanks - I'll try that as well. |
