I am new to this site and love it. Here is the situation. I have a 2005 CRD. No issues but I am perplexed. The oil drain plug is not threaded but rather it has a chain mounted internally within the oil pan. When you tighten it, it moves up the chain and seals the plug. It has a rubber gasket that is now done for. Does anyone else have this on their jeep? Should I replace the rubber gasket and keep on trucking?

Thank you for the input.

No I dont have this nor have I ever heard of this before but it sounds awesome. Mine was just a regular threaded plug that I replaces with a Fumoto valve.

Ok but it has oil in it... I was changing out the motor mounts and noticed the plug starting to drip more than i was comfy with. :banghead: If it persist through the night I will put new oil in it in the morning. Stay tuned and I will get some pics in the morning. It actually is a great idea but the rubber gasket is a bit of a pain. and the first time I changed the oil it was a surpirse... The plug does not come off the chain, so rushing oil goes everywhere if you dont push it up while turning it out.

Thank you guys for the fast input.

Sounds like a total Rube Goldberg solution to the stripped plug problem. No way I'd trust that to hold in crankcase oil. Get a Fumoto valve and get it in ASAP. Those are designed for oil fillers, not drains. The chain is probably attached to some kind of a piece of spring wire to keep it falling out of an oil filler tube. Definitely NOT stock.

Yep, this is a previous owner's jerry-rigged solution to stripped threads. You may need to helicoil it and then a Fumoto. I'd do that pretty quick if I were you.

Sounds similar to a drywall anchor with a "T" inside the wall. I would not trust. See viewtopic.php?f=5&t=66245&p=728122&hilit=thread*+drain#p728122 for how to repair threads and use a normal oil plug or Fumoto.

The drywall anchor is correct!!!! It is actually a oil plug design, patent # 5197567. Took it out and you guys are right... threads are stripped to bits, previous owner probably found this somewhere. Although it has functioned properly and I have not had any issues until now ( rubber gasket failing), I am going with the Fumoto route. Does any box hardware stores carry this or is it internet only?

Thanks again everyone. And by the way the motor mounts went smooth, pretty cake job.

I don't really buy into this product but FYI you can get 10% off at qwickvalve.com by using the coupon code FUMOTO10

I would not expect a box "hardware" store to carry much in the way of any auto parts and I don't see that any regular auto parts store carries them in stock. That said getting a Fumoto valve online is no big deal.

Both my son and I have fumoto's installed with no issues. Some worry that they hang down a bit if you do a lot of rocky off roading which might or might not be an issue. I do worry a bit about the lever somehow getting flipped and draining the sump but that' easily cured with a black plastic zip time locking the lever down for a cost of under $0.01

Like papaindigo, I've had one for years. I have the Skid Row skids, and it is well shielded by that. I have the one with the nipple, and fit a tube to it to drain - very convenient indeed. I find the lever fairly stiff, and shielded by the skid I doubt it can be flipped.

I am convinced that papa has a lifetime supply of zipties:)
