Post subject:  20 seconds then it dies

I have an 05' CRD with 135k +/- miles. the engine is all stock with stock tune. only changes I have made are the ORM at about 60k miles. and the EHM at about 80k miles. when I first start it in the morning, about half the time it will run about 20 to 30 seconds then die. the temp outside was about 60 degrees. took it to the dealership, they kept it for 2 days and could not pull any codes. "they did not charge me, pretty cool dealership" now about a week later, its doing it every morning and it did it when I got off this evening and it was about 80 degrees outside. it starts fine after I put a few miles on it. and one other weird thing that its doing is after runs for 20 or 30 seconds and it dies, when I go to restart it the glow plug light only stays on for about 3 to 5 seconds. it starts right up with starting fluid. I know its not a good idea, but its the only way i can get it started. sorry for the long post, but wanted to let you know what was wrong and thank you for your help in solving this problem

in-line lift pump. About $45. Or you could go with the better in tank one, but that's a lot more money, and a lot more work. When I bought mine it had the in-line pump, and I've never even had to upgrade the original fuel head.

There is a wire specifically for the purpose under the back seat drivers side, and you can mount the pump on the frame below it spliced into the fuel line.

Or, maybe just change your fuel filter?

Fuel filter has about 3000 miles on it but you're right It can't hurt to go ahead and change it I thought The lift pump was to keep Air out of the fuel system I can see how this would help it run better but I didn't know that it would affect the starting because once mine started it does run great I know what I'm doing now on my days off

yeah, could have gotten some bad fuel. Or, when it's shut off, an air leak lets fuel fuel drain back to the tank, filling the line with air? Just a guess on that one.

no code, hmm. And then there are cam and crank sensors, and other annoying electrical gremlins, but since it starts with ether, I'd start with fuel system. Let us know if it that doesn't work :JEEPIN:

Start cheap.

1. Replace the ASD relay. (Check)

2. Change the Fuel Filter. (Check)

3. Replace the Glow Plug Relay (Check)

4. Check the Glow Plug Harness (Check)

5. Check the glow plugs

I read all the back posts about lift pumps and learned a few things thank you I did check the bleeder on the fuel filter head and it had air in it every morning don't have the money for a lift pump install right now but dropped the tank and replace the quick disconnects with fuel line truck starting better but also noticed a very small leak at the fuel filter head is just A little moist around where the heater puck is A friend has a racor 245R fuel filter water separator unit it's new but does not have the heater I live in southern Mississippi it very rarely gets below 25° and when it does it's only during the night for a few hours you think I'd be OK running this or do I need the heated unit or is the heater an option I can install later thanks again for help keeping my truck (Piggy) running

no need for any heaters until below 20. I would plug it in for 20 mins or so if it's below freezing just to take it easy on it. There's a block heater already built in the side of the block if you didn't know.

Yes I use the block heater whenever it gets below 35° I just didn't know if it would affect the drivability of it without the fuel being heated as I drive it I didn't think it would matter but just didn't know I have lots of experience with gassers been rebuilding motors and putting together hot rods for 15+ years but this is my first experience with the diesel and loving every minute of it thanks

If the fuel heater puck is wet around it with fuel them that is the source of the air in your fuel and dying after start. I would pursue that. Happened to me when the bleed screw would not seal.
