So my 2006 KJ blew a head gasket at 130K, head was warped.
Got rebuilt head, timing belt kit and water pump etc from IDparts, EGR Kit from Sasquatch and went to town on it. Took me a month, got it finished and started right up and was running fantastic! Took it to Austin one weekend (4K mi on rebuild) and it acted like the fuel shut off. I couldn't figure it out so I sent it to the Dealership in May. They are idiots, they have replaced twenty parts (shotgun method of diagnosis) and couldn't figure it out so I had it picked up
(Sept) . Pulled the head first thing and it turns out it dropped a valve on #4. WTF?
So I need to know a couple things.

1 why did this happen?
2 can I get oil pan off without removing engine?
3 has anyone had problems with Motori rebuilt heads?
4 is it reasonable to just replace the one bad piston
5 I have the original head that's warped .25mm. Can I resurface it and get a thicker head gasket? (1-2-3 hole?)
6 any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

If you bought the head from IDparts, first thing I would do is call them up and bring them up to speed. They may want to do something about this. I can't say for certain, but call them and see. They are stand-up guys.

As for the rest, you need to pull the block from the engine bay, just do it. I'm in the process of the same thing, for what is probably a bad bottom end. You can (in theory) get the pan off without pulling the block, but it sounds like a cast iron mofo, so I wouldn't even really bother.

Bummer.

I had a similar thing happen to me, except mine dropped a valve shortly after a complete rocker/timing belt replacement. My #1 piston was taken out in the destruction.

I'm about to tear into my for the second time to hopefully rebuild the bottom and top ends. Make sure you take plenty of pictures to help out your fellow members. I am also interesting in the possibility of replacing just one piston, liner, etc. depending on the amount of damage to the bottom end. I won't know until the engine is pulled and disassembled.

Best of luck!

1. What condition are you gloe plugs? If the tip of the glow plug broke off and got stuck in the valve, that could cause it to break.

2. Nope. Just remove the engine.

3. I replaced my head with a used one from England. So far so good.

4. Yes, should be ok. But you will probably have to replace the liner too.

5. Your old head is far too warped to be machined and re used.

6. Contact VMspecialists over in England. They will give you a good deal on a used head.

OK Thanks y'all, good info , I guess I gotta yank it...that sucks since I just did the top end and TB.
Any CRD Pro's in Houston?.
Flash, Glow plugs were good, as were rockers.

no#1 , well on this motor anything can happen, did the timing belt jump out of time ? engine over speed? are the valve keepers in place?
