What is the best cold air air filter box upgrade?
Links would be appreciated.
Is there a way to make or adapt a different box so I do not have to use a flat panel air filter?
For some reason I just hate flat panel air filters.
But if that is the only option for a cold air intake, then I will stick with it.

I don't know if it's the "best" upgrade but the most common one posted is to retrofit a KJ V6 box. It drops right in and moves the air intake from down behind the grill to up above the radiator support cross member and IIRC has a baffle in front of that intake. Biggest benefit is for serious off roaders who look to get air intake well away from water; Note some not off roaders report water getting into stock air filter box is heavy rain also.

It does use the same flat paper filter which moves all the air your diesel engine needs just get a good filter with lots of pleats.

If you absolutely cannot live with a flat filter some have bolted on a largish cone/canister filter but IIRC the filter just has to sit there in the open as it does not fit any housing. If you do this I think you lose both filter box sensors so unless you have a tune the lack of the MAF sensor will trigger a constant CEL.

I do have the Green tune.

My break is no longer buried so I could make a box if I figured out a filter to use and a way to mount it

Is that a 2002 to 2006 KJ air box for a 3.8L ?

I'm surprised nobody sells a kit for a better air filter or a top load fuel filter housing

Our engines don't move a lot of air so i wouldnt think the filter is a big deal. That said I have an AFE oil filter in the stock air box

I just dont see how the V6 airbox, by drawing in air through a narrow slit between the hood and grill, could possibly draw in more air than the CRD airbox.
But yes, it does help keep water out.

Unless you want to go through the process of installing a snorkel, there are no cold air intake kits available for the CRD.

I'm pretty sure the stock CRD air box has more of a 'ram' air/cold air affect than the V6 box

the V6 box was a solution to wet filters in heavy rainstorms.

LTT at onepoint was doing a 3D printed intake as ram air

he hasn't logged on for a while - not sure it he still makes them

I remember Keith saying something about the v6 airbox snorkel being too restrictive. That's why I think they moved away from it. Granted, if you don't drive like on a race track, I think it would work fine.

That is not a cold air intake. I would have to build a box for it before I would try that. To many other projects that need to be done to spend the time. Hopefully some Week's lookin guy will come up with something
