My 2006 CRD that I've owned since new recently dropped a valve shortly after top end/timing belt rebuild (but no cylinder damage) Head was new but has a chunk out of it now. I had just replaced turbo, water pump, timing belt & pulleys, radiator & overflow, EGR bypass, fuel head, fuel pump, ARP stud kit, sensors etc Plus has full OME suspension, Snorkel, ARB bumper, warn etc. Dealer replaced transmission at 75k . Think I can get $5000 for it? Or more? Thanks for any input |

Dang, sorry for the loss man ![]() Here's where you're probably at: a rod probably needs replaced, and you're supposed to replace the whole matched set, although I know one or two have said that they have managed to side-step that. And, then there's the problem that they aren't selling the same weight pistons any longer (or so VM specialists told me), so doesn't that mean a whole set of pistons also? ![]() You could chance an ebay piston of the same weight, and maybe an old style rod shaved a hair to match the others (if it's heavier). Just my random thoughts on this. Where are you located? |

Non-running... I don't think you will come close to 5k, sorry. Rod damage is not assured, but how bad is the bottom of the head and the top of the piston? A used head from a boneyard will probably be your most affordable option, then put back the studs and the rockers (or replace the dinged ones) and put it all back together again, it should be good to go. Swallowing a valve on these just seems to be one-of-those-things that is very difficult to predict. Hopefully you won't ever experience another one. |

I would add up what it takes to fix it and then determine how much more you are willing to put into this thing before you consider it totalled. If you can put $2000 in it and then sell for $5000, then maybe that is worth it. Selling it as is won't get you much of anything. Parting it out might be the best way to get your money back, as it requires no further investment from you and you still have some good parts there (relatively speaking). Might take awhile to get all the parts sold, however.... |

Sorry but you're dreaming if you think you can get $5K for it in that state. It's probably worth little more than scrap value - $2K-$3K max. Your best chance of minimizing your losses is probably to spend $2$-$3K to fix it up and continue to use it if you can stomach the perceived risk of continued ownership, otherwise sell it. You should be able to make a bit on it running again versus selling as-is. Fixed up you can probably get the $5K you're hoping for now plus the repair costs. |

I have a used head in good condition with 110k miles on it. I also have a block with 160k. Although I can't confirm if it's good. All Pistons and sleeves look good and rotates good |

Yeah, agreed. I've seen running ones sell for 5k at this point. It seems like you have a good amount invested in it so it may just be worth rebuilding. |

well guys this is really bad when this happens , because we love our engines and we spend so much money trying to keep them on the road, but also this reminds me of 2 stroke detroit diesel engine with blowers on top of intakes , this think use to run backwards smoke coming out of grill , rev up pass max limit ,, run on its own oil , chase mechanics out of the shop because you know flywheel is coming out through the floor boards ,truck drivers call it detroit missile |

Mostly the valvular (cool word, right?) issues stem from the EGR valve creating an inordinate amount of soot and carbon buildup inside the intake. Eventually it builds up everywhere, most likely in the valves as well, since combustion (as well as afterthought re-combustion) is taking place. These build-ups free themselves at the most opportune time, and cause all sorts of havoc. Also ceramic glow plug tips have been known to free themselves and create some drama on their short exit cycle. That's about it, in a nutshell. |
