Because the PO put some fairly severe dents in the trans pan, I'm replacing it. However, I seem to remember people complaining that the dip stick would not seat itself in the tube. While I have the pan off (and I will be adding a trans pan skid plate) should I shave a bit off the dip stick so it will seat better?
While I have the pan off, is there anything that I should look for or be aware of? Thanks

Clean your magnet off, I got a bigger one for my pan when I did my service.

Also, instead of shaving anything, or cutting anything, just put a 15 degree bend in your dipstick (you can do it with your bare hands, then put it back into the tube. It'll be shortened by the bend, and won't come out any more.

My dipstick interfered with the pan. I removed the plastic top by punching out the pin, put the raw metal dipstick into the hole, and moved it up and down until it would just hit the trans pan. Then I cut off the excess top of the dipstick, and re-drilled the hole for the top plastic portion. My dipstick no longer interferes with the pan.

The stick bottoms out on the pan and measures the fluid level from the pan upwards. Since the stick is flexible the excess snakes up the tube. If you remove any length bottom you end up measuring a shorter distance to the fill line resulting in underfill. You would need to create a new fill line above the current one by the amount you cut off the length. Alternatively you can take the excess from the top while still ensuring that you can hear it bottoming out on the pan. Since you'd still be measuring the same distance from the pan up there's no need to mark a new fill line. I simply put bends in mine to form a concertina for the first 6 or so inches. I felt this looked more authentic than creating a new mark on the stick and avoids possible confusion over which fill line to use..

Since you go with a new pan anyways, I would add a bung for mounting a Trans temp probe. Napa sells some kits, which seal with o rings. Also, you can install a drain plug in same way, it will be less messy next fluid change.
