We are working on a idle bump for the KJ CRD and wondered if there is any interest in this type of feature. Current testing will have the engine idling at 1500 rpm if the ambient temp is below 50 F and coolant temps are below 78 C with an 8 C hysteresis. The idle is higher in park, neutral and drive with foot on the brake. Even in drive it does not want to push the vehicle, so that does not seem to be a big issue. We did a cold start at 40 F this morning and the engine reach full operating temp (80 C) in five minutes. For folks in the north this might be very advantageous. |

This would be a good option to have for us in the cold climates, I have thought about this before, it would help with warm up but also with preventing fuel wash and soot build up when idling in very cold temps. In days past it was normal and recommended on most diesel engines to have a diesel engine at an elevated rpm if you were going to leave it run I still have the habit of increasing the rpms on our farm equipment when you are leaving them idle for a bit.. My 2007 Duramax has an elevated idle built in and I believe the Ford & Ram`s do as well. The HD trucks from the big three automatically idle up & down when needed. |

I would have to test the Liberty, but usually 1000 - 1200 RPM is sufficient. |

Having the high idle in park would be great, not too sure about having it idling high in drive or neutral though. Like Flash said a switch would be ideal. Just my opinion... |

Most of our year is under 50f. I don't even think of it being a cold start unless it's below twenty. Hate to think of the extra fuel burning during spin down. A switch would be the only way to go. Might not even need it since I have the worlds' finest thermostat housing on order. |

So just to check - the elevated idle only kicks in at those temps - the rest of the time its normal? If so, I think its a good idea. We spend time in Germany and Austria and intend to drive up to Norway's North Cape and those places can get chilly. |

There is no software logic in the ecm to use the cruise control switches. The glow plugs are not an issue with high idle, they are only running for 2-3 minutes after a cold start. Glow plugs have more issues during the pre-glow and cranking phases, after it is running the fuel and air flow help to prevent overheated glow plugs. |

High idle in park sounds good. For those of us that have low stall converters, the high idle in drive may push the CRD. |

I think this would be a great feature. Ram EcoDiesel has this, probably because of the cabin electric heaters that replace the viscous in the crd. I will definitely update the tune. Gde, do you guys think 1200rpm is not enough? Just curious. |

I would love to try it. My first crd high idle was a small tool bag that I propped against the accelerator pedal when it was cold out. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help with the the program. Winter is here, +5 f this am. 1500 rpm would be my preference. 1200 doesn't make useable heat at -40. |

I'd say start by removing the engine fan entirely if you haven't already, and put an engine blanket on the INSIDE of the radiator, with only a small hole like the truckers use. Then the thermostat might have a prayer of bringing the engine up to temperature. You have a special situation, that is for certain. |

Fan is ghandi........all of my rigs have a winter front to block the radiator. No heat can be made at idle. Not enough waste heat available. More rpm is what I need. |
